This year's World's Fair is in Knoxville, Tennessee. What? For starters, Knoxville has erected its answer to the Eiffel Tower and the Space Needle. It's the Sun's Fair. It represents the theme of modern technology that is this year's fair. Knoxville sits in East Tennessee in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains. It's also the center of the huge Tennessee Valley Authority water project, with the Tennessee River plowing its way through the center town. Knoxville is not large, and as a result, issues such as how to traffic the estimated crowds is a nightmare for local police. They anticipate real traffic jams and limited parking at a premium. The town itself is changing rapidly in the face of overwhelming construction. Whole new hotels, both permanent and temporary, are going up, as well as the built-in urban renewal project that the fair has become. Knoxville has also been inundated with souvenirs of the fair, shipments of everything from t-shirts and coffee mugs. To sun visors and handbags are all ready for sale in many stores. If you've gotten tired of the same old shopping for the shoes and the hats, you know, well, the Sun's Fair is not the only thing to come out of the World's Fair in Knoxville. There's now a World's fair game. And the object, according to the instructions, is to buy and expand and to maximize your profits. Maximizing profits has become very popular these days, what with housing 60,000 visitors a day. Tomorrow, we'll look at some ingenious, as well as exploitive forms of accommodations. I'm Dana Middleton for Eyewitness News. The estimated attendance for this year's World's Fair is ranging anywhere from five to 15 million people. For this town of 180,000, your plans for accommodations, meals, and transportation should be made well in advance. Making a quick buck off the World's Fair has spawned some incredible ideas of where to house people. Most of the standby hotels are already showing near-capacity bookings. These houseboats can be rented for about $150 dollars a night. They hold between six and eight people. Condominiums are going up very quickly. These, about 15 minutes from the fair site, will go for about $65 a night. Even warehouses like Mullins are being converted into rooms with partitions, also $65 night. Bathrooms are in a separate building and they're shared. Just in case all those hotels are booked and all those houseboats sold out, you can rent a private room in a big old home, just like this one. Here, the rooms are going for $32 a night. And that's for two. For twice the price, deluxe rooms like this with private bath can be had in various parts of Knoxville. $15 per person will get you a dormitory room for two on the Knoxville College campus. A phone call can give you central World's Fair information. And I would not suggest you try to find accommodations on your own. Let them do it. I do recommend you find the restaurants and nightclubs. We did. And we'll let you know about them tomorrow. I'm Dana Middleton for Eyewitness News.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70388/file/156332#t=3063.59,3275.46
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70388/file/156332/transcript/86418/annotation/107
Speaker 22: This is a class in the school's small business management program with some rather unusual features.
