If you can't, you're not alone. Now you know why the state treaurer's race is considered one of the most dull of all the statewide races, but not this year. Republican Clay Myers currently holds the office. He's come under increasing fire from his opponents for investments that an audit says may have cost the state nine and a half million dollars. Myers denies that charge and points to other investments he's made that have brought in some 547 million. Despite the denials, Myers' challengers have lost no time in seizing the opportunity to make some political points with voters. Senate President Jason Boe, often described as one of the most politically powerful men in the state, has made the investment issue his own in his bid for the Democratic nomination. There were even claims, which Boe denies, that he engineered the early release of the audit to embarrass Myers. Boe cites his own experience at an unprecedented four terms as Senate president as his chief qualification. The Reitz Board Democrat has also managed to outspend all other challengers to Meyers by raising a war chest of over $41,000 so far. Close at Bo's heels is Multnomah County auditor Jewel Lansing, who managed to give Meyers a real run for his money as the 1976 Democratic nominee for state treasurer. Lansing points to her own accounting experience and her surprising showing in that 76 race to prove her credibility as a candidate. Most observers believe the Bo Lansing race will remain close to the finish. Meyers' Republican challenger, veteran senator George Wingard of Eugene, has thus far failed to raise even half the amount of money raised by the Democratic challengers. Wingard says his years as a Eugene builder have given him enough knowledge to handle the state's money wisely. He'll have to campaign a lot harder to catch the nomination. For better or for worse, Clay Meyers actions as the state chief investment officer have become the focus for this campaign. Despite the adverse publicity. Myers has been around politics long enough to have a good chance at weathering the storm.
