While the Central Oregon floor was unusually mild until December, the mountains were capped with snow by Thanksgiving. That gave Oregon ski areas the jump on California. Resorts in the Sierra Nevada range were closed until January. Those resorts either missed the peak ski holidays, Thanksgiving or Christmas, or tried to do nature's work all alone. It made for record crowds on Oregon slopes. Mount Batchelor is the sugar daddy of tourism in Oregon. This is the place where nature turns snow into money. At $21 a ticket, Mount Bachelor had its best holiday season on record with a one-day total of 13,800 skiers at the end of December.
