The 54-year-old man from Jasper, Indiana, made medical history as the longest-living artificial heart patient, and as the first to be able to live outside the hospital. Way back in November of 1984, Schraders had come to Louisville's Humana Hospital, Audubon. With a heart so diseased, he was projected as having perhaps only another week to live. If something extraordinary were not done. Considered an inappropriate transplant candidate since he had diabetes, Schrader was offered the artificial heart option by surgeon William DeVries, who had earlier implanted the Jarvik 7 heart in Barney Clark in Utah. Schraders accepted the idea. Those first 18 days with a mechanical pump were almost too good to be true. Schradered, asking for a beer, holding bedside news conferences, talking with President Reagan on the phone, and complaining about a delay in receiving social security benefits. But that rosy view of life with an artificial heart changed suddenly with a stroke caused by clots floating to the brain from an area in or around the artificial heart. It was the first of several strokes as doctors tried to find the right balance of blood thinning drugs. The next public view of Schrader shocked many people unfamiliar with what a stroke can do. For 115 days, he labored to regain physical and mental function, but he still suffered memory loss and struggled with speech. He got to know another artificial heart patient, Murray Hayden, who joined him in the hospital in February 1985. Hayden died this June. Twice last year, Schrader moved out of the hospital to an apartment across the street. The day he left the hospital the first time, his family looked back on the ups and downs of Schraders' life with the artificial heart.
