He'll replace conservative Archie Weinstein in January. The rest of the board is the same, but many votes will come out differently. Weinstein predicted disaster for county government if both Rust and Llewellyn won. The other commissioners don't feel that way. West Lane Commissioner Harold Rutherford told us the board won't have the same concern for rural Lane County but will continue moving towards closer control of its finances. East Lane Commissioner Otto Tehoff says he can work with both Rust and Llewellyn. Springfield Commissioner Vance Freeman says the board will be better off without Weinstein but he hopes Llewelyn won't want to spend too much. The county does have serious money problems because of falling timber receipts and an outdated tax base. One sore spot has been the district attorney's budget. DA Pat Horton has repeatedly attacked Rust and Freeman, calling them anti-law enforcement. But Horton congratulated Rust on his victory last night, and both pledged to work together on their mutual problems. All in all, the board will have a more liberal urban perspective, but Rust and Llewellyn will still have to get one of the other commissioners to join them to carry the day on any issue. My, it's been pretty wet outside. What this wetness means, not much locally, because we're not getting too much locally. Although we are getting some butternut, acorn, squash, cauliflower, and broccoli coming in now locally. Pretty good prices. Best buy this week in the vegetable market. You can look for California tomatoes as low as $0.39 to $0,49 a pound. You're going to be paying higher prices for your green peppers, cucumbers, and lettuce as we move into California. And Mexican growers. We get out of our local, prices will be going up as the winter progresses. Let's take a look over at the fruit market. We're getting some specialties right now. Persimmons, pomegranates coming in. Very good, a little high price. Prices will be leveling off, but they're only available for a couple months of the year. Other movement in the fruit markets. Just about finished with Valencia oranges, we'll be getting into California navels. Not quite as good of a juice orange, but a good eating orange. Also, ruby red grapefruit starting to come in now. These are out of Mexico, and they're good. We'll be getting into the really good Texas and California ones. Oh, another two weeks, three weeks, they'll be coming on. Finally, let's take a look over at nuts. Now, we're getting into to the party season, so nuts are starting to come on the market now. You're going to pay higher prices for them this year. We've got almonds, filberts, walnuts, brazils. Oh, about $1.29 to $1,49.59. You'll pay a little more for pecans. Finally, roasting chestnuts, local roasting chestnuts. Very hard to find. We had a blight here many years ago. Not too many local chestnut trees left. There's a few horse chestnuts, but you can't eat those. Most of our chestnuts now are imported. Look to pay higher prices, as high as $3 a pound for these little babies. But they are excellent. In order to prepare these chestnuts you score them with a knife on the top, put them in a shallow baking dish, throw them in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, and voila, chestnuts. Hoping all your nuts aren't too hard to crack. For eyewitness news.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70246/file/156190#t=3462.63,3577.06
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70246/file/156190/transcript/86300/annotation/153
Speaker 28: Would perhaps ask him to write what it was.
