Two and a half inches fell on the central section of the state coastline, and more than three inches pummeled the Astoria area. Several roadways were washed out and state highway crews were kept busy all weekend trying to divert water. The avalanche of rain, in combination with high tide levels, set up flood conditions for this pocket of homes on the Alsea River near Walport. Flood warnings have also been issued for the Nehalem. Wilson and Siletz rivers along the central and northern coast, and in the Willamette River Basin, flood advisories have also been issued for Johnson Creek, which is in the outlying suburbs of Portland. Here in Eugene, the storm broke the listed January 31st rainfall record with slightly more than an inch and a half measured. Similar records also toppled in Salem and Portland. The storm's sledgehammer winds wreaked havoc all around the state. 85 mile an hour gusts leveled long stands of trees in and around Newport. And together the wind and the fallen trees turned out the lights in several different coastal communities. Downed lines cut power early Saturday morning to Depot Bay, Otter Rock, Waldport, rural sections of Newport, and the Coronado Shores subdivision near Lincoln Beach. Crews worked around the clock to restore service, but at this hour power remains out in Depot Bay Coronado shores and Otter rock. Utility and emergency management officials cannot predict when they'll be able to restore power to the small communities north of Newport, but they assure residents they'll keep working hard to solve the problem.
