You'll find huge shipments of jewelry, stereos, watches, and other expensive luxury items. With few exceptions, you'll save hundreds of dollars on the most costly items. Large displays of silver and of perfume are common. Stores like Little Switzerland, H. Stern, Sparky's, and Cardow Jewelers line the streets. You can get burned, so compare. Away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown is the largest undersea aquarium outside of Israel. Coral World features a wide variety of local sea life. The admission is $7. Drive on to Megan's Bay, said by one well-known publication to be the sixth most beautiful beach in the world. It's oddly rectangular and lined with trees. Depending on what time of year you come here, you may need a good beach. The prices do go down, sometimes significantly, during off season, about May. One thing that goes up is the humidity. It may be best to come in winter. St. Thomas, I'm afraid, has taken a turn for the worse in respect to its hotels. I would to Tortola or Virgin Gorda for beauty. So we are. Tomorrow. I'm Dana Middleton for Eyewitness News. The main Dutch community of Philipsburg is quaint looking, but the shopping here is gearing up. Places like the New Amsterdam Store have expanded across the streets. Watches and radios are available in large bulk. The prices can be much lower than in the States. Get some prices at home before you come so you can really compare. Cosmetics are another big item. You will find them in very large supply. The supply of French restaurants here is also good. The service in the islands, generally speaking, if you can get it, is inattentive and often rude. Lagranui is often considered the best. Dinner can run you about $50 for two, but the food and atmosphere are great. Les Gargoyles is not consistent. Sample lunch before you dive into dinner here. Buya base is generally good, but also inconsistent. Many people don't stay long, and the chef turnover is high. Antoine suffers from a similar problem, But as a general rule, it's good. These places all tend to be a bit overpriced. I would avoid Pinocchios for a meal, but definitely stop by for a cool drink by the water. Some good values in the vegetable apartment, highlighted by red and white potatoes. These are new crop out of California. They're running anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds for a dollar. And when I say new crop, as opposed to old crop, what your old crop potatoes are your russet potatoes from last year. Russeted skin, not as good a potato. These are much better for making potato salad. Excellent right now. Also along the same lines, yellow onions coming out of the California. Quality is much better, four to five pounds for a dollar. Also out of California, cucumbers, carrots, very good values this week. On the other hand, green cabbage and red cabbage out of california, very high price, as high as 40 to 50 cents a pound. For a salad, lettuce locally coming in, red leaf, green leaf, romaine, all very good quality, running 40 to fifty cents a head, head lettuce will be a little bit higher. Again, locally, asparagus, about the peak of the season now locally, running about a dollar a pound, excellent quality. Also out in California, one other vegetable. Sweet corn, great for Memorial Day weekend. Sweet corn right now is just so-so. Price is four or five years for a dollar. And quality will be improving on a daily basis. So that's what's happening over in the vegetables. In the fruit department, you've been complaining about Valencia oranges. They are high, $0.40 to $0,50 a pound. Quality is improving. It's been a short crop for Valencia orange right now. Highlighting the fruit departments, Granny Smith apples. They're the apple out of New Zealand. That's the Granny Smith. They're running $0 .60 a pound, approximately. An excellent eating or baking apple. Wonderful color. Also, strawberries out of California. Local crops about 10 days away. Good, good quality strawberries from California running 70 to 90 cents a basket. But again, the quality is just wonderful. And finally out of california, watermelon. Mm, mm, mm. Real sweet melons. Now look at that, hardly any seeds running 19 to 29 cents a pound. And if it's warm this weekend, mm, watermelon sounds real good to me.
