I understand that the water's cooled off considerably, though, and they're not getting that many of them. This time of the year, I began to not fish for steel head anymore and start looking for something else on the rivers. I like to go down on the Umpqua about this time of year, take my smelt net. A five-gallon bucket, my boat, and my big rod with me and look for smelt and sturgeon at the same time. This is just the leading edge of the smelt run. If you go down there and get into the smelting up about Scottsburg on the Umpqua, you can dip about two-thirds of this bucket full and that will be 25 pounds in your limit. If you get just a few smelt though, just four or five or six, that's enough for sturgeon bait. You take your big rod, your boat, go on down the river to about the big bend area down around Gardner Island down there. Put one of these smelt on that big rod. Let it down in one of those deep holes and see if you can find an old sturgeon. If you can get one between three feet and six feet, they make good eating. Any other size you have to turn loose. Go down there and get in one of those big holes. Hook one in Big Sturgeon, you really might have a fight on your hands. Fred Hicks will be 85 tomorrow, and is certainly not worried about running low again in the near future. It's going to last me a long time, I'll tell you.
