Sometimes it's tough for the uninitiated to sift through the boxes, bottles, tubes, and rolls and come up with stuff worth saving. Basic first aid starts with the basic first aid kit. And this is one that I got a while back that was only about 10 bucks and it contains the basic guide, but also all the band aids and gauze and adhesive tape you can use. I've supplemented it with, for bug bites, which I tend to react to, some camphofenique that comes little small tubes and vials. And then of course uh... Some insect repellent cream, always an essential if you're going to be out where the mosquitoes are. If the bugs do get to you, lots of hikers swear by aloe vera gel or benadryl ointment. But if the itch you're scratching comes from poison oak or ivy, an Albany company has a product in the stores called Tecnu that restores your faith in miracle cures. Mentioned a moment ago that I tend to have some mild reactions to bug bites and the like, but if you have someone in your family who has a fairly severe reaction to bee stings, you might want to talk to the family doctor. They'll usually prescribe some sort of bee sting kit like this one that will allow you to give some emergency treatment in the field. There are other items worth considering, snake bite kits, those compact silver space blankets, or heat and cold compresses designed for travel. Now obviously you're not gonna perform any major surgery with these supplies. These are some of the basic first aid items. They're designed for some basic minor injuries. If a patient is injured more severely than that, you wanna get medical help to them or get them to the medical help as quickly as possible. Now if you are planning to travel far away from home, there are some other items you might consider stocking in your car. They include a pocket knife, waterproof matches, and a waterproof container, even water purification tablets for emergency drinking stocks. For basic roadside emergencies, I recommend you have a good stock of flares. There is the traditional 15-minute type, but I like to get the real powerful ones that last for 30 minutes at a time. They cost a little bit more, but I think they're worth the investment if you really have a problem in the middle of the night or out in the Middle of Nowhere. I also carry a small portable fire extinguisher and a flashlight that's probably older than I am, but has never failed me when I've been in a pinch. I just update the batteries every couple of months, and it shines pure and true. When I'm out in the desert or going on the road for extended periods of time, I'll invest in a gallon of distilled water. Not only is it good for drinking in emergencies, but it's good for the radiator, the windshield wiper. If I cut myself, I can pour it over the cut before I start disinfecting just to clean out the wound. Sunseekers should invest in good sunscreen, protective sunglasses, maybe even a hat to shade their face. And finally, dress for the terrain and for the conditions. In this case, I'm gonna go walking on a fairly cool day. I've got my jeans, my socks, good hiking shoes. A shirt with sleeves that can roll down if it gets too hot, or if the bugs start to attack, and a nice light jacket in case conditions change.
