At Lane County Office, we're probably best known, though, for the gardening urban horticulture field and the canning food preservation field. We get lots of calls on those two, especially during the summer months. But there are other programs that are old standbys, I guess, in the extension, the 4-H youth development program. Is part of Extension, many people don't realize that, but it always has been, and it is in every state in the Union. And agriculture is the traditional thing that many people think of in home economics. And in addition to that, we have, in my field is forestry, we have marine science in this county. It doesn't get fair shake though, we have our services of a Marine agent out of Newport, but... We do have an energy agent who spends 60 percent of the time here and serves three other counties as well and then we have the extension food and nutrition program which serves low income families with children.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71198/file/157149#t=14.44,86.67
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71198/file/157149/transcript/88506/annotation/3
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71198/file/157149#t=87.71,90.11
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71198/file/157149/transcript/88506/annotation/4
Speaker 2: Well, it's not easy. But we also have users who are really providing more of a service than they are getting a service and that would be We have about 800 volunteers who work out of our office, who are really helping other people. They received help from Extension initially in the way of training, the Master Gardeners and the Master Food Preservers would be in that category, very obvious ones. They take about 60 hours of training initially, and then they have to return that many hours of volunteer work, and fortunately for us. Most of those people like it well enough so they come back year after year and they have to be recertified with additional training each year. But the total number of people that are served would require us to add up all of the phone calls, which about probably 200 a day is a decent average. We used to be about 300 when we had more agents and more telephone lines. They're busy most of the time. And then do you count all of the people we send newspaper to? We send that, we print 17,000 copies of that. Normally, most recent edition, we printed 100,000 copies. Can I count all of them as beneficiaries?
