These pictures of Sakharov and his wife Elena Bonner were reportedly taken by a Soviet journalist this summer. The West German newspaper, which published these pictures, says they prove Sokharov is alive and that he has broken off his hunger strike, which he began last May when the Soviet government refused to let his wife leave the country for medical treatment. This picture shows an apparently well-nourished and healthy Sakharov looking at a July issue of Newsweek. At that time, there was a great deal of speculation in the West as to whether Sakharov was living or dead. Here is his wife passing a poster for an event that hasn't yet taken place, an event scheduled for the 26th of August. So there seems little doubt that these pictures are recent. The West German newspaper reports they were taken in the town of Gorky, where Sakharov was exiled in 1980. The paper also says it has film of the Sakharovs, and it quotes a doctor who saw the film, saying they seem to be under the influence of the kind of drugs often used in brainwashing.
