We've had four consecutive days without rain, and I think that's the first four in over a month. The steelhead fishermen have gotten really impatient and are almost tired of polishing their tackle. Well, some of the smaller streams, such as this one, and some of other streams along the coast have began to fall and clear. This might be the weekend we can get to those fish. I talked to Danny Hanna down on the Elk this morning. He said the Elkh River was falling, but it was still muddy, So he might not want to try the L. I talked to Ray Baker of Baker's Whitewater Guide Service, and he fished Upper Lake Creek, said it was in good shape and falling, getting clear. There was some fish up there. The Upper Siuslaw, Ten Mile Creek, the Alsea, several of the shorter streams, the Smith River. All should be in good shaped by this weekend, provided we don't have a big downpour and wash us out again. I hope you get over there and get a chance to get out one of these fish. The state once owned the giant trees of the Crabtee Valley but sold them for $1.25 an acre back at the time the first townships were surveyed in the 1800s. Now they're owned by Willamette Industries, an island of private ownership surrounded by federal BLM land. But the BLM may yet ride to their rescue, because that federal agency owns all the timberlands surrounding Crabtree. It's now discussing the possibility of a land exchange with Willamette Industries. In this particular case, I'm not so sure that a rule was violated and. If there was no rule violated, I'm not so sure that we should have had any sanction whatsoever. Now if there was a rule violated then yes, I believe there should be a penalty imposed. The original penalty that we had imposed upon us was probation for one year, forfeiture of a game after the season started, and a $400 fine, which we voluntarily paid to the school that we were supposed to pay, or play, I am sorry. I would say that that would be a very sufficient penalty in this particular instance. Now, not in 25-year history of the OSAA has there been as severe a penalty as we have had imposed upon us. Unfortunately, a band does have, it does appeal to a different sense that we have. It appeals to an esthetic sense, whereas the athletic programs appeal to an emotional sense, a competitive sense, which is a much more emotional issue than what a band would go through. I dare say that I would be very surprised if the leaders of the bands around this state would penalize their youngsters for practicing in the manner with which Sheldon and Marist had been practicing. So I'm not saying that that's right or wrong, and probably if the band members had been sanctioned like we would, it would not be fair to them either. And probably it would have not created the emotional uproar that this has created. But I think we're dealing with two different animals here. I think the human reacts differently to one of those situations than they do the other. I think if you put on the front page of the register guard that the number one and number two band in the United States was coming to Mack Court to play against one another. Thank you. I doubt that you'd get that place filled with fans. But if you said that the number one and two basketball teams or the number 1 and 2 football teams in Autzen Stadium were coming to town to play, I think you'd probably fill the arena. Well, that's my attempt for poetry. And you know, looking back at the year, it was a very good year for fruits and vegetables. The only major problem we had was the med fly scare down in California. We won't have to deal with that again, probably until this spring or summer. Let's take a look and see what the end of the year values are. What they not are are in the lettuce department. All your salad greens, radishes, green onions, carrots, things like that. They'll be reasonable, but the main ingredient in that salad, the lettuce, head lettuce, leaf lettuce, very expensive, short supplies out of California. Other vegetables are going up in price, but head lettuce and leaf lettuce leading the way out of the California, very high priced. Swinging over to the fruit market, citrus, citrus citrus, the big three words, beautiful citrus out of California, tangerines, tangelos, naval oranges, all very good quality, very reasonably priced. Out of Texas, we've got wonderful grapefruit, and out of Florida, Indian River grapefruit. Very, very good right now. A little higher price, but excellent quality. Finally, a California fruit, the kiwi fruit. New fruit coming in right now, I cut one open for you here. It's a very thin skin, with a beautiful, beautiful center. It tastes kind of like a berry. Actually, if you could imagine what a color green would taste like, that's what a kiwi would taste. Don't drink too many fermented or distilled fruits or vegetables. Have a safe holiday.
