Each year, more than 30,000 people come from around the state and around the world to run its whitewater rapids and to fish its famed salmon and steelhead runs. The Rogue heads in the high cascades east of Grant's Pass, rushes through the canyons of the Coast Range, finally enters the Pacific near Gold Beach more than 200 miles later. The wilderness section through the Coast Range is so popular that float permits are required. About 15 professional outfitters offer guided four-day camping trips. They leave in five- and six-boat caravans every five days. The charge is $600 to $700 a person, and the net result is a big boost for Oregon's tourist economy. Among the attractions, the infamous Blossom Bar, where big boulders combine with rushing white water for not-so-cheap thrills. Blossom bar isn't the only challenge on the rogue. This is the coffee pot where the rogue canyon narrows, often crunching boats against boulders or snapping oars. They want an oar. In other places, like Rainy Falls, even the best of guides have no choice but to rope their boats down past the trouble spots. Perhaps the rogue is most famous for its fishing. Salmon and steelhead are available almost every month of the year. Right now, the hot fishing is for small steelhead, known as half-pounders. Other anglers hope to hook a giant sturgeon like this one, a fish that may be older than the state of Oregon. However, sturgeon fishing is strictly regulated, and the really big ones must be released unharmed. All that it offers, you might think the rogue is a paradise. If so, these days there's trouble in paradise. The rogue's water flows are now at the mercy of two dams, the Applegate and Lost Creek. And the guides claim these dams have ruined the fishing by releasing too much water into the river at the wrong times.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70829/file/156779#t=113.99,235.9
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70829/file/156779/transcript/89924/annotation/3
Speaker 3: It's really hurt our business down here. The affidavits claim the victim's husband, Michael Lissy, contacted a number of people to kill his wife in the weeks just before Martini was found murdered in her Valley River hotel room. This week, Lissy and Dave Wilson were charged with aggravated murder and conspiring to kill a 26-year-old woman. The affidavits claim Lissy was willing to pay $5,000 to anyone who would do the deed. In fact, police report Lissy gave one man a gun and $900 to kill his wife. The man reconsidered, but a gun matching the same description was later found in Lissy's van. It had belonged to a police officer. Authorities were told by Martini Lissy boss at a Portland bank where Katherine was a successful loan officer that she had a life insurance policy of $195,000 if she was killed while on company business. Otherwise, the insurance would total $37,000. Lissy allegedly told police after his wife's murder the killing might have been due to a bad drug deal and that he was unaware of any insurance. Although Lissy filed for the insurance and allegedly told friends he wanted the murder to look like a robbery or a drug deal.
