Newport's quaint old town bayfront includes a collection of commercial and charter fishing docks, canneries, and other visitor attractions. The second most popular destination in our survey was Bend, the largest city in central Oregon. It has one of the most scenic backgrounds you'll see anywhere. Nearby resorts offer golf, tennis, swimming, miles of bicycle and horse riding trails, and even whitewater trips down the Deschutes River. Skiing areas are only 20 miles west of the city, and it's hot in the summer. Seattle was a close third in our survey. Many Northwesterners are traveling to the Emerald City to visit the China exhibit at the Pacific Science Center. Seattle is the only city on the West Coast to feature the exhibit. Its six-month run ends August 31st. Those who visit will have the chance to share in the wonder of 7,000 years of Chinese discovery. From two-story silk looms and the artisans who weave their magic to the world's first seismograph, where dragons' teeth, toads, and bronze balls mark earthquakes.
