They've been pressing Springfield school officials since the start of the academic year for Delena to be allowed to wrestle. But the district has refused, saying first, that a girl wrestler would create unnecessary administrative costs, and second, that it didn't want to force boys and girls into situations of intimate contact. According to the Garalts, the district's refusal is unwarranted and unconstitutional, and their position was supported in court by a contingent of wrestling experts from Douglas County's Sutherland High School. Sutherland testimony centered on second-year wrestler Asia Deweese. Dewees and two other girls wrestled in a dual meet tournament at Springfield High on Saturday. Deweece, her coach Bill Mull, and a boy wrestler all testified there have been no significant problems involved in her participation. In addition to the Deweze comparison, Monday's hearing centered on the intimate contact ruling concerning normal wrestling moves. Other questions were raised about the violence of the sport and potential health hazards Delina might encounter as a wrestler. Judge George Woodrich took the issue under advisement, promising to have a decision prior to Thurston's first wrestling match, which is scheduled for Thursday. Following the hearing, Springfield officials declined comment. Garrelts and her attorney say it's likely they'll continue with legal proceedings.
