Cabins closed off to their owners since May. Pacific Power and Light worries that if the logs break free, they could foul the spillways and turbines of the Swift Creek Dam across the Lake to the west. You could hardly call this prime timber. It's full of odd lot sizes, and it's covered with pumice pebbles from the mountain. But it can be salvaged. And it should be done soon. Otherwise, it'll become a breeding ground for insects that could threaten the forests that are still standing. SDS Lumber of Bingen, Washington bought the timber here for nearly $710,000. That's five times what the Forest Service thought it was worth. But company president Wally Stevenson says it could be a bargain. He'll know for sure when he starts moving it. He says the real cost comes from moving the timber out. He'll hire local loggers from Woodland to do it. Stevenson has a deadline of August 31st to clear the lake. That's an acre a day.
