WomanSpirit magazine was started at Golden. The women helped the men start work on a gay men’s country magazine. Political issues were always being discussed at Golden. Ruth talks about being celibate the last 6 or 7 years of her relationship with Jean. Nelly’s building of an octagonal structure influences Carl. Zarod and Nelly built the octagonal house. Then Nelly moved out, got a divorce and received a settlement. With that money she built the Hexagon at WomanShare. The men evicted Ruth and Jean. Ruth says, “When they threw us out” she did not have time to take her books. She lost a very important book of paintings by Paul Klee and she has never forgiven the men on the land for taking some of her favorite books. Ruth talks about being a vegetarian since 1971. After 5 years at Golden, Carl did not want Jean and Ruth buying into Golden. He asked them to move out. Carl will later die of AIDS. Ruth and Jean buy Rootworks for $7800. At Rootworks, Ruth and Jean were able to rent 2 cabins for $25.00 a month to women. Ruth talks about La Rose, [who now goes by “La Rosa”], Caroline, Tangren and Joan. Joan is in love with Jean. Tangren is in love with Ruth. The winter issue of WomanSpirit is put together at Tangren’s house in Ashland. Many women help to put the issue together. Ruth had not seen her youngest son David since June of the year before. Ruth wondered where he was, but for many months she was too busy, with the magazine and moving, to worry. David is found dead in the mountains above Mountain Grove. He had committed suicide. There was no support from the lesbian community. Only two women came to the burial. Ruth talks about her pain and anguish at losing a second child. Ruth reads David’s manuscripts. Ruth discusses loss of loved ones. Ruth feels Jean is unable to be empathetic to Ruth’s loss of her son. The first issue of WomanSpirit is put out at Rootworks. Solar power is installed at Rootworks. Ruth talks about Joan. Ruth and Jean moved to Golden in 1973. WomanSpirit magazine starts in 1974. In 1978 they moved to Rootworks. Money from the magazine is used to build the barn, called Natalie Barney, at Rootworks. Tory builds the barn with help from many women. Twenty women come to the first Women Photographer’s Ovular. Jean suggests a feminist photography magazine called The Blatant Image. Ruth talks about the Ovulars, which were weeklong workshops for feminist photographers. Ovulars took place for six years. The second issue of WomanSpirit is made at WomanShare, women’s land in Southern Oregon, near Grants Pass. Ruth talks about Dian Wagner, Carol Newhouse, Billie Miracle, and Nelly Kaufer. Ruth talks about workshops at WomanShare. Ruth would play her women’s songs at the weekend workshops. She would either be paid or could go to a workshop for a reduced fee. Ruth talks about her research on Alice Austin. Ruth talks about the building of the barn. Tory hired other women to help. There were also many volunteers. The structure and roof of the barn are completed between June and October.
