Its maggots infest a variety of fruits and vegetables, turning the produce mushy. When the fruit or vegetables fall to the ground, the larvae enter the ground and emerge as flies between six and 15 days later. In the past year, ground spraying of the insecticide malathion, combined with the release of billions of sterile fruit flies, appeared to have solved the problem. But a recent outbreak brought demands and then plans for aerial spraying of Mount Athion by helicopter in the infested area, the Santa Clara Valley. But residents of that area, which include cities as large as San Jose, responded with alarm and vigorous opposition, calling aerial spraying a threat to the health of future generations. Yesterday, Governor Brown, to the consternation of the state's $14 billion agricultural community, said no to aerial spraying. Instead, he ordered the residents of the 660-mile area to strip their trees of fruit by Monday. Members of the California Conservation Corps and National Guardsmen were called up to begin stripping trees and aid residents in disposing of the fruit. Full-scale ground spraying will be resumed. And roadblocks were set up today on the edge of the quarantine area. State police are inspecting vehicles and confiscating fruit. In the first few hours today, several hundred pounds of fruit were seized at this roadblock. Okay there, that one there will hatch out to be a nice, great, big, dry fly tonight. See that one right there? Flat-looking things on the back of him where he's got hundreds of them in here and several different kinds. They ingest those snails and shell and all and then after they've had them in their stomach the stomach juices digest the inside right out of the snail and then just after they have digested the inside out of it the fish passes the shell right out. Sometimes you can catch a fish and their stomachs will feel just like they're full of rocks or something snail shells inside The snails or the salmon flies, everything's crawling here. It's hard to keep up. This is your typical snail. There's a lot of those all over the river. There's two or three different kinds of snails, some smaller and larger. You always, every time I dip in one of these things, I always find a few things in here I don't know what they are. But the fish eat them. That's a stone fly or a salmon fly. And this one right here is a mayfly. It's not different any of those types of things. Not a couple of rocks. It didn't get anything really big that time. A lot of cats. And here's a tip on what's happening outdoors. Have you ever wondered what was in the river for the trout to eat when it wasn't full of brown rooster tails or somebody hadn't just dumped a can of nightcrawlers in there? Well, aquatic insects are the staple for the trouts' diet. There's a lot of them in the River. We've just excavated about a foot square bottom of the River here and taken 25 to 30 insects of four or five different species out of the river. So when you're out fishing on a river and you're trying to match what's in the river so that you can get your trout, remember the aquatic insect life. This is Terry Coleman for Eyewitness News on the Mackenzie River. I'm Terry Coleman and here's a tip on what's happening outdoors. If you've been out on the river and looked into the water and wondered what the trout fed on when the river wasn't full of rooster tails or worms or flies that someone has tied at a fly tying bench the river is full of aquatic insect life. That's the basis for the trout's food. When you're out on a river trying to match the hatch or catch a fish on a fly. Remember the aquatic insects alive. Roll over a rock occasionally and look to see what's under it. That's what trout live on. We've just excavated about a foot of the river's bottom here and got 25 or 30 bugs in one dip of five or six different kinds that hatch five or six different times of the year and provide trout food the year around. So remember, if you're out on a river, roll over a Rock, found something that you think the fish would eat and hook a big fish Keep your tip up. This is Terry Coleman for Eyewitness News. Here's a screen full of river bottom that we just turned over. And look at the different kinds of bugs we have in here. We have stoneflies, salmon flies, caddis flies, crane fly larva, snails, lots of different kinds of insects on the bottom. All these bugs came out of a couple of square feet at the bottom of the river. This is what trout live on. This is a staple for their diet.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251#t=2996.93,3337.56
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251/transcript/86407/annotation/120
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251#t=3344.07,3345.07
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251/transcript/86407/annotation/121
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251#t=3360.99,3363.27
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251/transcript/86407/annotation/122
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251#t=3364.15,3364.89
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70307/file/156251/transcript/86407/annotation/123
Speaker 38: Let's go. There's some people on the river that think if you hold a beer can over the edge of the boat till the bubbles quit coming up and it's full of water and you turn it loose, that it's gone. It is not gone, it goes on down the river to the slack holes and there's where you'll find the beer can later. Aluminum cans don't dissipate. If you had room to bring a full beer can with you or a pop can when you come out on a fishing trip on the river, please find room to take the empty can home with you.
