The same hill closed the highway exactly one year ago this week. That slide closed the road for 17 hours. A state transportation official on the scene today said the highway department couldn't do anything to prevent another slide because the hill is private property. Some nearby residents speculate the slides were caused by water that builds up on a road just above the hill. The slide probably happened at the worst possible time, a Friday afternoon and the eve of a normally busy ski weekend. The slide also occurred during school time, which means the children that live on that side. Are stranded on this side. Transportation officials say if you are driving to Bend, the best way to avoid the slide is to drive to Sweet Home and take Highway 20, or take Highway 58 to Oak Ridge and take a road to Cougar Reservoir, commonly known as Addafi Drive.
