Even though officials are just becoming aware of the disease, doctors think Giardia is probably native to North America. Even though Giardio is nothing new in Oregon, the parasite still catches people by surprise. That's because you can get Giardiosis by drinking any untreated fresh water in Oregon. Whether it's a fast-moving river like the McKenzie or the most isolated and pristine Mountain Lake. Even deep in the wilderness, there's wildlife, and that wildlife serves as a host for Giardia. The Forest Service now warns campers to boil or treat any water they use while camping. Right now, the risk of Giardiasis is probably at its highest because of the spring runoff which washes animal waste into lakes and streams, but doctors warn that there's no time of the year when drinking water in the woods is completely safe.
