The crowd at the courtroom was large and sheriff's deputies wanted to make certain no one attempted an attack on 25-year-old Jeffrey Scott Wagner, who appeared before Judge William Lewis for the sentence everyone knew was coming. In delivering today's sentence, Judge William Lewis said that he was satisfied that Jerry did everything in his power to consider the evidence in this case. Lewis said society must strive for a code of honor which exceeds the minimum standards set by criminal law. Judge Lewis also spoke directly to Wagner saying he should have sought a lawyer instead of acting as his own defense. He told Wagner he should've learned to trust people more and in doing so might not have found himself in a courtroom facing a death sentence. Wagner strangled 23 year old Jerry Koenig in her Albany apartment last June. Today her parents Margie and Ed Koenigh were visibly shaken after the official sentence but Mrs. Koenick told us she thought justice had been served. Wagner's execution may be a long way off. Already, American Civil Liberties Union officials have said they expect to challenge Oregon's death penalty before the State Supreme Court, and Wagner's case is where they'll make their stand. Attorney General Dave Fronemeyer said the challenge was anticipated.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70921/file/156872#t=30.4,96.47
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70921/file/156872/transcript/88313/annotation/2
Speaker 2: Only a question of sooner rather than later. As far as applying this kind of microscope to biology, this is the only one in the world. This is a lamp housing and inside's an ultralight of light. And a happy spring to everybody. And wouldn't you know it, just like me, I went outside, the weather was getting a little warm, stayed out too late, and I caught a spring cold. And one of the best remedies for a spring-cold is to put a lot of vitamin C in your body, and one of best ways to get that vitamin C is to eat some citrus. Voila, we're going to talk about grapefruit today. Now, grapefruit is in season now. Its season runs from about November through April. So this is a good time of year to purchase grapefruit. A little history about grapefruit is descended from the Pumalo, which is actually an old style type grapefruit, grapefruits are actually a hybrid. The Spaniards first planted grapefruit in the West Indies. And Postileon, you remember him, he was the guy looking for the Fountain of Youth. Well, he didn't find the Fount of Youth, but he found grapefruit and he brought him to Florida in the early 1500s. Commercial cultivation of the fruit began in the mid 1800s. However, it wasn't until late in the 1800s, around 1880, 1890, that grapefruit became a staple food in this country. Today, there are four main areas in the country that grow grapefruit, Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona. I personally think right now that the Florida grapefruit are the best. In fact, there's one area in Florida called Indian River. This area in for Florida produces some of the finest grapefruit in the world today. When you're going to look for a grapefruit, look for nice, firm, heavy fruit with no blemishes on the flesh. It gives you good weight. If it's got that little Indian River sticker on it, you can be assured you're gonna have a good grapefruit. As I told you earlier, grapefruit are very high in vitamin C. They're also a very good tonic to drink. You can make grapefruit juice. You can eat grapefruit just cut in half. You can broil grapefruit and grapefruit is also good when served with other fruit. And with some poultry and pork dishes, so it's kind of a versatile food. This week, grapefruits are very good buy in the store, as low as $3 for a dollar on small grapefruit and $2 for a dollars on large grapefruit. I think you just should go out and if you catch a cold like I caught one this week, eat lots of grapefruit and you'll feel better. I feel like once I see her eye, then my feet can let go of the spot they stuck in. I think year after year, Spielberg is going to get passed over, no matter how respectable or adult he makes his pictures.
