Officials tell us that there is one square meter per person here in this camp that is ten times below the minimum standard set by the United Nations. Well we've seen a tremendous improvement in the people's nutritional status and also in their general attitude. They were very apathetic when I first came here and now particularly the children are playing and running around the place and just generally taking more interest in life. We've seen that a big change in the peoples attitude and I think that's mainly due to their improved nutritional status. Where's that food coming from? It's coming from a variety of services, the Catholic Relief Services provide special food for some people, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Save the Children Fund and they come into the ward and supplement the rations that the people are having and so if we have patients that we want to have extra food. Just six weeks ago, this piece of ground was nothing but an open rice field. Now it's a crude, but fully functioning medical ward, part of a 1,000 bed medical hospital. One doctor tells me he's able to give four times the amount of medical care in this poor shack as he could give in his multi-million dollar facility back home. What are we going to go from here? Well, that's our major concern, that the people here live in an area for about two and a half square meters to each person. And this creates a health hazard, because all sorts of sanitation and overcrowding may induce an epidemic outbreak of all sorts diseases. And so we would like to spread these people over a larger area. Up to now, no decision has been made yet about this, but we are trying on different levels to get more space for these people here. Crowded like this you're kind of sitting on a medical time bomb aren't you? That's right, yes, we had just now we had the first cases of measles and in a tropical country like this, measles are very dangerous and life endangering for small children at the age of up to five years. So the spread of this disease, even we start with the vaccination campaign, will be much quicker in an overcrowded area than if people had more space available. Bye. Bye-bye! What was it that drew you over here? Uh, the situation, the intensity of the situation. I wanted to see what it was like to be in circumstances like this and to see how I'd do under circumstances like these. Are the circumstances what you expected to find? In some ways they are, but in other ways, right in the hospital area, it's a little better than what I expected. But out in the camp, it's about what I expect. It's not really too hot. What do you think you can do for those people out there? Well, from the way the political situation goes and the way that the Khmer Rouge is setting up in the camp, not a whole lot. They're going to have to come to us, but we're not going to get into the camp. They're not all that friendly all the time.
