There are about 6,500 people that are expected to pack Civic Stadium tonight for a big game. Faithful fans are coming out. This is the first time in 10 years that the Eugene Emeralds have made it to the championship series. And let's say fans here are very excited for this game and they are ready to get it underway. The first pitch is at 7.05. The gates here open at 5.30. There have been a steady stream of people heading in right now. About 700 tickets are left, we are told. General admission tonight is about $6. We want to see if we can catch a fan, but to tell you the truth, they are so excited to get in there and get their favorite seat that not a lot of them want to talk to us. The Northwest League Championship Series gets underway tonight. It was they host the Yakima Bears in the first of a best of three series. We'll talk more about the M'S and the rest of the day of a busy day in sports locally right after the break. Hello everybody, welcome back to Civic Stadium as he gets set for the first game of the three-game Northwest League Championship Series. The Eugene Ems hosted the Acoma Bears, first time the Ems have been in the series in 10 years and looking for their first Northern Division crowd in nearly 20 years. Bruce Chen, the EMS ace pitcher on the mound tonight for the start and also a couple of side notes. Adam Cross, we saw him walking out of the building just a few moments ago, still has that contusion on his thigh and will not play tonight, may be available for Sunday. And Mark DeRosa apparently back at the apartment sick as a dog so he's also unavailable tonight so the M's are going to be a little thin in the infielder's position but still have a good chance as they host this game again the gates open at 7 or already open game starts at 7 0 5 and still some tickets available if you're thinking about joining the second rush of fans are coming down to get into the ballpark tonight well of course it is also a very big night for the local high school football teams the first major weekend of high school action around the state of course our F&F Friday football show premieres tonight at 1125. The big game, second ranked Marshfield hosting third ranked Thurston. We'll have those highlights plus all the scores from around the region tonight again on FNF at 11 25. Also tonight top ranked Roseburg will be at home hosting Mazama. A new look for the Indians in 96. Actually a new viewpoint for Roseburg fans. The new stadium has been constructed on the north side of the field and the old grandstand on the south has been torn down. It's still rough around the edges but plenty ready for a football game.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=346.68,448.09
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/21
Speaker 13: We're really excited. They checked in to Austin Stadium just a couple hours ago for a quick walk through the Wolf Pack, a bold team from a year ago, and consider one of the most prolific passing teams in the nation. Again, kickoff tomorrow at one o'clock. No live television for this one, and with the new parking changes, it's a good idea to arrive a little early. Meantime, the Beaver's are entertaining the reigning Division I AA champions from Montana. OSU set to unveil a new offense that will hopefully show a little bit more balance than the Wishbone offense showed in years past. The Beavers biggest concern is depth on the defensive line. They have a great set of starters but if one of them goes down the experience level drops considerably. Other concern Montana. The Ducks push Ohio State to five sets before losing in the fifth set. Ducks drop to two and two. They've got a couple of more games in Houston and they play actually eight on the road before they come home to open the season on September the 24th. And we wish them best luck in Houston as they continue with the Rice Tournament. Let's head out to the pitch. Oregon, their first year in organized soccer at the varsity level. They were hosting Pacific this afternoon over at Emerald Field. The Ducks still looking for their first goal. A couple of good chances. Sierra Marsh was trying everything in her repertoire. She kind of sidekicks one, but it's scooped up by the boxers goaltender. Marsh had several good chances and finally scored the first ever goal in the second overtime period. The Dux have won their first ever match. The final was two to nothing, as they even their mark at one and one. Some basketball news quickly. The Blazers Rashid Wallace has been found innocent of assault charges back in North Carolina. Wallace was accused of using his car to block his ex-girlfriend from entering a preschool that is where their new one-year-old child is going to school. The Blazers do open fall camp on October the 4th. Meantime, Oregon point guard Kenya Wilkins is one of 30 finalists for the Wooden Award given annually to the nation's top collegiate basketball player. The 5'10 guard is the school record holder in steals and is second in all-time steals. Could be a future Oregon Hall of Famer. And that also reminds us that tonight is the induction ceremonies for the Oregon's 1996 class, including the 1974-75 Kamikaze kids who made the pit so famous back in the early 70s. Well that's quickly here from Civic Stadium, again the games get started at 7-0-5 right here. Bruce Chen on the mound for the M's as they try to pick up the only game that they will have here at home for the Northwest League Championship Series, again, the best of three. They'll play game two on Sunday back at Yakima on game three, if necessary, Monday night also in Yakima. So we'll see you back at the station for an 11 o'clock wrap-up from Civic Stadium. Well, you can catch more of the Queen, more than you would ever dream necessarily. I mean, impossible during the course of the celebration, but I thought I'd address the question about rain by giving you, A, a look at our satellite loop, because you may have experienced a few clouds earlier today. I think you will experience reruns, something we don't deal with usually at KEZI, but tomorrow afternoon the clouds will thicken up and we'll get some showers similar to what we had today, but it looks like most of them will be gone by noon on Saturday. Noon on Saturday, well, it looks like again we may see a few showers till about noon on Saturday. Because of the clouds that we had around here today, things stayed fairly cool. 65 degrees, upper 70s, that's average for this time of year, so we didn't quite make it. That's been the case the last couple of days with the rain and the clouds around. And again, you can see plenty of clouds out there over the eastern half of the state. We get a break through about 4 o'clock tomorrow evening and then the clouds thicken up. We may even see a sprinkle by then. Let me give you a quick glance at what you can expect to deal with tomorrow. About 47 first thing in the morning. 67 and a little bit of rain, not enough to spoil a party. On Saturday the rain, as I mentioned, could linger till about noon-ish. It doesn't look like a steady rain, just kind of sprinkly stuff, something that we're used to in Eugene, and never mind. And on Sunday, the best day of the weekend, looks dry, 74 degrees. I've also noticed a artwork that fits into the local motif here, and I thought this was pretty nice. It hasn't rusted yet because it's been dry in here. And can We get a comment from our steelhead. No comment yet, so I guess they're against the rain, too. This is the classic steelhead. It's called Erector fish number three. I haven't seen one or two. But Rick, this is the kind you don't need a sinker when you catch them.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=1120.63,1218.97
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/64
Speaker 1: Now, so John, the slug queen is immune to salt? A lot of variety down here. All the local movers and shakers have been invited, and I've been standing still, hence I didn't get invited. But if you want to come down and you didn't an invite to this early preview, you'll be able to see the art show right through the Eugene celebration. I'll have people down here to explain things. And all the art that you can see behind me. And I'm assuming most of the people, too, are from Lane County. So everything that's generated down here by local artists. And there's some really interesting ones. There's always something a little off the wall, a little different. That's fine. But there's real interesting things down here, too. My favorite is the steel head back behind me. It's an iron fish. And it's apparently the third one that's been put together. So a lot of interesting stuff down here. If it sounds like I'm trying to avoid talking about the weather, well, there's a small reason for that. It does not look like your typical hot, sunny Eugene celebration. We'll start off our weather discourse today by giving you a look at what the temperatures were doing around the state because most locations stayed in the sixties on the west side if you wanted seventies on Medford and Brookings interestingly enough also in the Dalles seventies but everybody else in the 60s and if I put the cloud cover on the map here you'll see why most of the day was spent under cloudy skies a little bit of drizzle a couple hundreds of an inch in Eugene Springfield area this morning but most of us spent most of a dry but again with the lack of sunshine It never warmed up all that much. Other parts of the country, not quite ready to head to the winter mode yet, although if you're looking for the hot spaces, there are not many of them around, Phoenix, 93, I'm not real impressed, Miami, 92, that's not exactly hot, most of the Rocky Mountain states staying in the 50s, they had a lot of snow, a couple inches of it up in the higher elevations of the Rockies, and if I give you a look at our extremes and cloud cover from around the country you'll see that only Palm Springs made it to 100 degrees, Alamosa, Colorado. Started the day off at 23. And again, a lot of the clouds you see out there dropping some snow up in the higher elevation. So let's face it, it may not officially be fall, but it's real close. I'll look now at our satellite loop, and you'll be able to watch the clouds coming in across the Pacific and aiming mostly to the north of us. And I think if we do get rain out of these next couple of storms, 90% of it will stay in Washington. But 10% might be enough to at least dampen the Eugene Celebration Parade. Right now, I'd say not enough rain. To cause problems that will keep you from going and attending the parade. But instead of a big ridge of high pressure, sometimes we get that off the coast still this time of year. That kind of a little low lump, and that means things will stay cool and a little damp right on through the weekend. Let's give you a forecast now. We'll let you watch some of the folks watching the art down here on the coast. Partly cloudy tonight, sunshine early tomorrow, and then that storm gets a little closer. Maybe a shower or two late in the day. If you head north, you're more likely to get damp. Same basic story for the Cascades, some clearing tonight, but again, some showers possible in the north late for tomorrow. The freezing levels staying at around 11,000 feet, so no snow coming out of this one. For central Oregon, a few clouds around and some sunshine for tomorrow morning. Maybe a sprinkle near the mountains for tomorrow afternoon. Highs in the 60s for Roseburg. At least some sunshine, enough to warm you up to about 70 in the morning, and then things will cloud up a bit. No rain though from this little storm for the Roseburg area. Corvallis the likelihood of a shower or two. Sometime oh between around five and seven best chance to get wet would be during the night time hours and finally for Eugene Springfield Clouds on the decrease tonight then clouds on the increase for tomorrow a shower possible late in the afternoon We'll be broadcasting live from the Eugene celebration rain or shine Winds not too much of a problem 40s overnight 60s for tomorrow afternoon Recapping Sunday looks like a beauty. It also looks to be dry back into the 70s. I've mentioned a few times We almost always make it to 90 in September. Only one year in the last 10 that we haven't. Well, I think we're going to change that to two years in the past 10. We had an incredibly hot summer. For a lot of us, that meant your garden kind of withered on the edges, looked a little dried up. But that wasn't the case for everyone. Our September garden of the month belongs to Bess and Bob Williamson. And not only do they get to enjoy the beauty, but because it's in the front yard, they're sharing it with everybody.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=1248.26,1498.98
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/70
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=1500.86,1503.66
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/71
Speaker 4: The names of the flowers are familiar, but Bess and Bob's arrangement makes the yard especially beautiful. Don't have to be part of this whole decision-making process. I know you do we're in Eugene after all, you know We all have to vote who votes we go to John Fisher. I Okay, okay. It's all it's done. We'll come out here for a while You did bring up an interesting point that you were talking about the riverfront research park being built up Well, a lot of things have changed in Eugene in the last couple of years with all the building for example Notice this little line right here on the asphalt. You know what this line normally means It means you're in a parking lot, but this time You can't park here. See, this is the middle of the food court right now. So if you're thinking of coming down and just parking where you normally do, you may not be able to. And because the Eugene celebration has moved around a few times over the last few years, pushed away by different buildings taking place and going up. Think about that when you come down. Allow a few extra minutes because I can testify. It wasn't easy to find a place to park. I believe LTD is running busses back and forth and I'll check on that and confirm it with you in a bit, but again, something to think about. Where you can park. Not where you can always park, although I kind of like the way this parking lot looks now with giant food tents all over the place. Maybe they should leave it this way all the time. Well, enough about your parking situation, let's talk about the weather situation now. I'll give you a look at our satellite loop, and yesterday I was thinking of sprinkles at least through Saturday at noon. I don't think that's going to happen anymore. As I mentioned a bit ago in Portland, it's quite likely to rain a little bit through about midday tomorrow, but for the Eugene-Springfield area, anywhere south of Corvallis, you'll see some clouds around. I don't think it'll be completely sunny until Sunday. But tomorrow looks like it will be dry and this evening looks like it will dry and that's an improvement over some weekends we have seen recently so rain will not be the problem it'll be kind of cool tomorrow if you're a parade watcher so think about that in terms of what you want to wear but it will be dry things you won't see in the parade almost everything will be in the parade but let me show you something you won't t find the rhino group won't be here from washington dc this year because they just had a baby a 138 pound baby Rhino babies, rarely born in the U.S., therefore they're taking this year out of the parade, but an incredibly cute little critter there and some of the human babies on their way down to see it too. How about a look at our temperatures now, and it's probably not a big surprise to see us in the mid-60s with the clouds we had, Medford 77 degrees, and again if you look at the satellite picture and I'll stop the motion for you this time so you can watch exactly which cloud is where. There's enough breaks out there to make this a rather pleasant evening, but I think you'll find more clouds around. Tomorrow morning than you are seeing this evening. But again, a dry one. A quick glance at what you'll have to deal with or get to deal over the course of the weekend includes a few clouds around and then about 48 at seven, not a whole lot warmer than that at nine. So think about something warm to bring for the morning hours. 66 by tomorrow afternoon, longer term outlook. Finally, it's officially going to be fall. It starts on Sunday and the warming trend gets going on Sunday. Also about 68, so a little more sunshine. Next week, Wednesday on, I think we're going to get into the fall heat wave that we always get, or almost always get. So this weekend at the Eugene celebration, certainly not hot, but plenty pleasant, and again, dry.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=1855.45,2030.84
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/97
Speaker 1: Okay, thanks, John. I was having a smoothie here, and I've been eating some of the Afghan food. And also, I've got a funnel cake right here, too, that I've been munching on. And if you like food, you'll find something that you like down here. And there are some people that seem to like every single thing. Take a look at our funnel cake here. Can we get a tight shot of this here, Rob? Oh, man. The Cajun guy is after the funnel cake. So you like the food? Somebody will be happy about everything. Okay buddy, you back off for a second there and I'll be dealing with you a little bit later. By the way, if you like alligator meat, the little Cajun food booth behind me here actually has alligator on a stick and it really is made out of alligator tail meat. They raise the alligators for this, just like they raise cows. So it's not as if they're out there sneaking around grabbing wild alligator. This is something that is done on a farm just like your cows and your sheep and all those other things. Let me see if I can give you a look at what's going to be happening over the weekend. You may have noticed the clouds breaking up this afternoon, and I think that we're going to see a few clouds, a few showers up toward Portland, even up into the northern half of the Willamette Valley, but for the Eugene Springfield area, it looks like nothing more than clouds. Tomorrow morning, parade folks, as the parade crawls to the street, I should mention it crawls through the street and leaves a trail of slime behind it. No rain, but about 48, 49 degrees at the start, so keep that in mind when you're dressing. For your parade watching. I'm gonna give you a look at the crowd that's gathered down here now, and we'll put a forecast together for you, starting it off along the coast, where there could be a stray sprinkle or two, but it won't amount to a whole lot. If you want rain, you'll have to head up towards Astoria, and even then, I don't think you'll find very much. In central Oregon, or I should say up in the Cascades, a few clouds around, sure, but not much in the way of rainfall. Temperatures staying... Right on through the course of the weekend. Central Oregon, cool overnight, and then sunny during the rest of the day. Highs in the mid-range of the 60s for Roseburg. Lots of sunshine through the weekend, and temperatures heading up 2 or a bit above 70 degrees. Corvallis, you're likely to see a sprinkle or two late tonight or tomorrow morning, but a sprinkle that's nothing compared to the rest of what we've been dealing with in September. And for the Eugene Springfield area, look for the clouds to thicken up a little bit later on tonight. More sunshine for Sunday than Saturday but again no rain for the celebration and it looks like the dry weather will stick around through the celebration we'll also be seeing some really nice dry weather for most of next week and especially Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday things are really going to start heating up we haven't made it to 90 yet for the month of September but we just could by the end of next weekend next weekend but hey let's not worry about next weekend we've got this one to go along with Some people a little bit angry, a little teaved, that it's not damper down here, and speaking of famous personalities, not only do we have this one, Rick Dancer will be on the stage behind me, perhaps singing with the alligator, I don't know. Rick Danzer down here a little later on this evening, introducing some of the lovely entertainment. More lovely than this. I'm sure you're getting ready to look at the lunar eclipse, and obviously the number one thing you need around here to see an eclipse, clear skies. And for once, we actually have that, despite the fact that we're approaching October. For us, it'll be the southeastern sky that we'll be watching for the eclipse, and it'll pretty obvious once the moon starts popping up. Portland residents were looking at something a little different today. Their traditional landmark, not the moon, but they were looking off at Mount Hood. And what they saw coming out of the mountain had a few in Portland. I thought I'd kind of fill you in on that. So again, eclipse gets going tonight as soon as the moon is rising. And by 930, it's all back. So if you want to watch it come back from about 830 till 930. You'll see the moon returning to the sky. We'll have some more details coming up tonight at six o'clock. So this is a quick overview of what happened yesterday evening when the moon first rose. It just looked like it was coming through haze. That was not the case. That was a fully eclipsed moon. And then at about eight thirty the moon started coming back to what you're used to seeing during a full moon which is a big bright white object in the sky but it took about an hour photographer Rod Woodward spent some time outside taking shots of the moon and then stringing them all together for you so you if you were too busy last night to see it there you get it on television a slightly condensed version Well today would have been another great day to be outdoors. Yesterday evening, just marvelous to see everybody outside enjoying themselves at a lunar event like that. Today, sunshine and about as nice as it gets. Let me give you a look at our high-temperature festival last year because it was raining. Well, that might have been smart, but this year, absolutely beautiful weather up here. Thanks, Randy.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=3423.68,3481.81
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/187
Speaker 9: Until this point at milepost 144 where the standoff began. They forced him off I-5 and onto this grassy knoll, the car flipped over, and as you can see, it's all cleared away now. The only thing remaining is a lot of broken glass and a lot blood from the shooting by a police officer earlier, a sharpshooter. It all started about five miles up the road. A few more notes about the hostage situation and how police resolved it. First they attempted to use a cell phone. They tossed him a cell phone and attempted to us that but we're kind of in a vacuum here so the communication wasn't good. Then they got him a police radio and used that to talk with him. They did give him several packages of cigarettes which he wanted to stay calm and the little girl had asked for candy which was on its way but the situation was resolved and the little girl taken away before the candy arrived. Deanna? Jean, do we know anything else about the little girls condition? Well, police are being very guarded about what they're saying. They do say, though, that she was not injured badly. Mostly it sounds like bumps and a few cuts from when the car tumbled after it left I-5. We believe she was taken to a hospital in Roseburg, and we have been told by police that her mother was being flown down to be with her.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=3498.44,3568.35
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/189
Speaker 9: Alright, thank you very much, Jean Powell, reporting live from Sutherland.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301#t=3569.6,3572.48
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71349/file/157301/transcript/89828/annotation/190
Speaker 1: This morning, that's where the little girl was living. When Chantille Thomas opened the door, he barged in, took the girl, and took off. Doug, do we know if the babysitter or the little girls knew the suspect? We don't know that. Salem police don't that.
