In fact, the walls are just as shiny as the six fire engines which are housed here. They've rolled out of this building six times since its opening on March 16th. And these volunteer firefighters are ready for the next blaze. Their new building features a sophisticated alarm system which automatically opens the doors and turns on red warning lights as soon as an alarm goes off. Fire Chief Jamie Haycock knows every inch of the new fire hall, and well he should. He designed it. The U of O architecture graduate spent a year drawing up the plans, but it was well worth the wait. The city paid him only about $1,000, saving $13,000 in architect's fees. The building was designed with future expansion in mind. It has a meeting room complete with a piano and pool table. A wood stove is on the way. There's also a kitchen, which boasts a microwave oven. Couches, a TV, and books fill the lounge area, which could be converted to a dorm if the department ever switches from an all-volunteer to a full-time paid operation. Already, four moderate earthquakes measuring more than 4.0 on the Richter scale have shaken the area since last Thursday. And now something even more unusual. Minor earthquakes are hitting every few minutes at the rate of nearly 40 tremors every hour. The Forest Service is now warning skiers to stay off the mountain because the earthquakes have increased the danger of an avalanche. A number of small snow slides have already hit the mountain, but so far, no one has been injured. Despite the warnings, some people have continued to ski and sled on the mountain. Unfortunately, this week some of the changes we're going to find aren't very good. We're going to see some higher prices because of some bad weather. Let's talk about the good news first. Your best buys this week, in the vegetable department, would be things like artichokes as low as $0.49 a piece, clipped top carrots as low $0 .20 a piece. Yellow onions, all sizes from Oregon, as low as ten cents a pound. California asparagus, reaching the peak of its season as low as $1 a pound. Mexican tomatoes, still good, but nearing the end of their season, $0.40 a pound, and last but not least, over in the fruit department, we've got navel oranges and Texas grapefruit, very reasonably priced. Let's turn to the bad news. Your worst buys this week, high prices. Spinach from California, as high as $0 .80 a bunch. When you can find it. Cauliflower Ride of California. Very expensive because there's no weight to this cauliflower. You might pay 50 cents for a head. It might be over a dollar a pound per price. Green peppers, end of the season out of Mexico, a dollar a pound. Bananas, in short supply and a strike down in Nicaragua, 45 to 49 cents a pound, and last but not least, lettuce. Head lettuce this week will be very high, as much as a dollar ahead if you buy it by the pound. One way not to get ahead, try leaf lettuce. It's much more reasonable, maybe 49 cents a head. Either way, go this way. Lava, sure, we have some lava early in the life of the volcano, but later on the activity gets more and more explosive. You get more ash, and the activity becomes intermittent. That is, there are long periods of time nothing happens, and then it starts up again for a few weeks, or a few months, or few years. So the character of the magma that is erupted is quite different in the Pacific Northwest from Hawaii. A typical scenario might be that first you have a series of ash eruptions like we're seeing now. That's sort of blowing off gas, that's sort blowing off of gas, it's venting off gas. When a lot of the gas is gone, then you'll get this viscous liquid start to well out afterwards. ...At high temperature and then settles as a sheet that we talked about. Here is some consolidated ash. Is tough there. You can see all the particles. It's just been pressed together and turned into a block of rock. Now these over here are examples of volcanic eruptions that make it into a spindle shape and then as it's hurtling through the air it gradually cools. The bell guard deflects the blade to the outside and it causes sort of like a cone-like shield of protection. Wherever you move, there is a cone which protects your body. Basically, when you come on guard for fencing, there's about six feet between you and your opponent. Of that six feet, 31 inches in each hand is taken up by the blade. This is the epay. Unlike the foil, the epa is still called the dueling sword. It has a groove in it, which gives it extra strength. And this is traditionally called the blood groove. The bell guard, as you can see, is a lot larger than the foil. It covers almost all of the hand, the front part of the hands. It also guards the back part of your arm. Epay is the oldest weapon. It's a weapon that was used for 300 years as a dueling sort. And until it became a sport weapon in 1900, it was still used as a dueling sword at that time. OK, now it has a point, and it can't hurt you. This is a saber. And what you are doing with the saber is you are trying to hit either the head. Or the side of the body.
