You know, I've been very active in the Democratic Party for a number of years, statewide and in district, and in fact my encouragement to run came from the Democratic Party itself. If I had made up my mind I was going to run last winter, I would have done things a little bit different than I did do in the last session of the legislature. I would have probably put out more press releases, would have gotten around the whole district so that I would have become better known. Unless that job has already been re-emptied by the press of the United States. But it is a little popular these days to make jokes at the expense of the president. But I want to say in the same breath that I wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes a pretty stout comeback from the political onslaught. Despite the reservations I have about his ability to regain public confidence, I wouldn't write him off completely by any means. His message on the energy crisis was, I think, a definite step. Toward his regaining believability because the public that I've observed very definitely believe what the President said. His doldrums seem to have bottomed out at one particular moment in his life, and that was the moment when he mentioned in that conservation appeal the magic word Oregon. And he has been going up ever since. And certainly, it ought to be looked at on a case-by-case basis, but there's no evidence that we need to make a retreat. And asking for permission to ignore clean air standards is self-defeating. Those standards haven't even got us where we're going. I don't think we're more than halfway to where we are going in meeting these standards. And now to talk about a wholesale retreat is a statement in the fact that we can destroy the air. We can destroy the people's health so we can have business as usual. Until we've made every conservation effort, until we've make every legitimate sacrifice, we shouldn't even be considering easing these environmental standards. We've been and are a wasteful society.
