Riverside parking lots, large and small, were jammed all the way from Hendricks Bridge to Vita and beyond, as pitcher folk went after the 45,000 hatchery trout planted in the Mackency by the State Department of Fish and Wildlife. Most of the people we talked to had better than good luck, with loaded stringers being hauled up from the water by folks of all ages. In a strictly personal observation, it looked as though drift boaters and rafters were doing better than those who were throwing their spinners and worms in from the shore. The floating anglers hovered over the deep holes and landed more of the pan-sized rainbows while we were watching. Something else we noticed while stopping at various sites along the river was a respect for the native McKenzie trout. People seemed to be keeping only the hatchery fish with their distinctive clipped ventral fin while throwing back the natives to protect the stock. Another heartening sign of the season was the amount of business being done by merchants on the river. Most of the store owners we dropped in on seemed to be putting plenty of the green stuff in their cash registers, and they attributed the windfall to fishermen and opening day tourists. Today's hearing concerned the AG's request for a preliminary injunction against DNL fitness Don Yenor and Sean Gilsonen. The injunction asked that all defendants be prohibited from working in health spas in Oregon, prevented from destroying any business records that might be used as evidence, and kept from destroying any assets from the fitness solution. Don Yenor and DNL Fitness were represented today by local attorney Kelly Beckley. All regular district and circuit court judges are away at a conference, so another hearing on the injunction was scheduled for Beckley's clients on May 12. Sean Gilson did not show up and was not represented. Emily Simon, an attorney with the AG's office, says she'll submit a written order asking a judge to sign the injunction against Gilson and put it into effect. Some 2,000 members of the fitness solution were left without a place to exercise and without the money they paid to join when it closed February 21st. Today's hearing is the first part of the AG's effort to get restitution for members and impose civil penalties of some $250,000 on each of the defendants. Although he's not yet been formally arraigned, he's being held in Multnomah County Jail tonight on the strength of an FBI complaint that he illegally seized the commuter aircraft with 13 people on board. An estimated 40,000 passengers a month are now traveling through Mayland Suite Airport. To avoid future hijackings, investigations have begun into exactly how Thomas did it. There's been speculation that he simply hopped over a fence. FBI officials in Portland told us they are concerned with convicting Thomas, and finding out how he got on board without a ticket is only an incidental part of their investigation. The main thrust will come from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators from Seattle expect to complete their findings in about two weeks. Richard Meyer from FAA says a list of recommendations for improving airport security may be forthcoming at that time. But he says it's not likely the public will get a look. The report will go on to the agency's Washington DC office. They'll take another two weeks to process the report. And Meyer says there are no guarantees that the information will be made public then either. He says this is in the interest of maintaining airport security. So it appears the public may never know how Doug Burton Thomas, who claims to have been drinking before the incident, managed to get on board Horizon flight 2318 without anybody knowing about it before it was too late. You know, it seems I never finished stocking those oranges. Anyways, Memorial Day weekend's just about here. And if it's been kind of hard to tell at the end of May, because the weather has been a little so-so, I've got some good news. First off, the weather's going to start to improve. It's going be a great weekend, right, John? Secondly... There's a lot of new produce coming in right now. California's starting to really come on strong. Over in the fruit department, melons. Watermelon coming in about 29 cents a pound. Cantaloupes. Honeydew starting to come in a little bit higher price. But some really nice watermelon to enjoy this weekend. Strawberries. Still excellent quality berries. 69.79 cents a basket. Red, ripe, luscious berries. We're starting to get some really new items. Peaches, plums, nectarines, seedless scrapes, all around a dollar a pound or so. A little high price, but a very good quality for this time of the year. Also, hot avocados in right now, a wonderful addition to your picnic plate. Granny Smith apples out of New Zealand. Now, if you've been tired of those mushy, brown-turning apples this time of the year, the Granny Smiths out of New Zealand, remember, they're having their fall like we have our spring. If you're tired of mushy apples, these are wonderful, tart, crisp, flavorful apples out of New Zealands, Granny Smith. Over in the vegetable department, a few new things, new crop of potatoes, red, white, no blue potatoes, however, very good for potato salad, wonderful addition, three pounds for a dollar. Leaf items, a lot of good salad things coming in right now. Head lettuce, salad items are all down in price. Local spinach coming in about 49 cents a head. Very, very nice quality. Green onions, radishes. And lettuce prices and vegetable prices start their slow descent now as the season really starts to come on. Finally, first week of sweet corn, California sweet corn. We always stay away from the Florida corn because it takes so long to get here. Good corn, sweet for years for a dollar. A really nice treat for right now. So have a nice, safe, enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70955/file/156906#t=2356.12,2465.76
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70955/file/156906/transcript/88255/annotation/83
Speaker 34: We will have two lanes of traffic open at all times.
