Oregon scientific could revolutionize that industry. They have a patent applied for a machine that automates much of that process. They've also filed on a patent for a new development that evenly distributes the from the lamp onto the fibers. The annual market for signs in the United States is something like $12 and 1 half billion. So far, fiber optic signs like these have only captured a tiny fraction of that market. Meanwhile, in Japan, fiber optics signs already account for 5% of that country's market. Unless you've been on vacation in some place warm, you know that the weather's been pretty severe here the last week. That really doesn't affect our produce prices, but the problem is that the weather has been pretty as severe in other parts of the country where fresh fruits and vegetables are grown, particularly California. We're going to pay higher prices this week for vegetables. Among the affected items out of California, broccoli and cauliflower, about a dollar a pound. Now that's up about 30 cents a pound, lettuce, particularly leaf items. The fields have been very wet and soggy and hard to get in. Leaf lettuce is up, looks to pay about 80 cents a head for red leaf, romaine, green leaf, butter lettuce. That's a lot of money. Another reason we're going to be paying higher prices is because some of the items aren't coming from California. Now they're coming from farther away places. Texas, Texas cucumbers, they're about 50 to 60 cents a piece. Florida tomatoes, one of my favorites, I'm teasing, about a dollar a pound, they come all the way from Florida. So in general, vegetable prices are on the rise. Over in the fruit department, the news is a little better. Of course, we still have good buys on apples and pears. Most of them are grown in the Pacific Northwest. Out of California, fruit scene is actually a little bit better. Kiwi fruit coming in now, very good buy. Tangerines and other citrus, naval oranges coming in. Lots of good varieties, lots of flavors to choose from, and the prices are receding. People say, what can I do to make a nice fruit platter? There's no peaches, there's melons, they're kind of poor. Well, combine apples, pears, grapes, red grapes, improved grapes, they'll make a night combination and they'll be very festive. It'll be the colors of the season. Best buy in the fruit department. This week, bananas are the lowest five pounds for a dollar. It is one of the few soft fruits on the market. So all in all, fruit prices are remaining relatively stable, actually coming down in some instances, and vegetable prices are going up. Unless you've been on vacation in some place warm, you know that the weather's been pretty severe here the last week. That really doesn't affect our produce prices, but the problem is that the weather has been pretty as severe in other parts of the country where fresh fruits and vegetables are grown, particularly California. We're going to pay higher prices this week for vegetables. Among the affected items out of California, broccoli and cauliflower, about a dollar a pound. Now that's up about 30 cents a pound, lettuce, particularly leaf items. The fields have been very wet and soggy and hard to get in. Leaf lettuce is up, looks to pay about 80 cents a head for red leaf, romaine, green leaf, butter lettuce. That's a lot of money. Another reason we're going to be paying higher prices is because some of the items aren't coming from California. Now they're coming from farther away places. Texas, Texas cucumbers, they're about 50 to 60 cents a piece. Florida tomatoes, one of my favorites, I'm teasing, about a dollar a pound, they come all the way from Florida. So in general, vegetable prices are on the rise. Over in the fruit department, the news is a little better. Of course, we still have good buys on apples and pears. Most of them are grown in the Pacific Northwest. Out of California, fruit scene is actually a little bit better. Kiwi fruit coming in now, very good buy. Tangerines and other citrus, naval oranges coming in. Lots of good varieties, lots of flavors to choose from, and the prices are receding. People say, what can I do to make a nice fruit platter? There's no peaches, there's melons, they're kind of poor. Well, combine apples, pears, grapes, red grapes, improved grapes, they'll make a night combination and they'll be very festive. It'll be the colors of the season. Best buy in the fruit department. This week, bananas are the lowest five pounds for a dollar. It is one of the few soft fruits on the market. So all in all, fruit prices are remaining relatively stable, actually coming down in some instances, and vegetable prices are going up.
