Today we're not going to talk about anything serious. I know the news is so serious, but the produce news is all good and light. We're going to be real happy this week. Vegetables. Vegetables are great this week. California produce is good. Locally, things are very good with a couple of exceptions. What is good? Carrots, zucchini, peppers of all kinds, lettuce. Now, lettuce out of California is going to be a little higher. They've had a lot of hot weather down there, but locally, and here's a beautiful head of local lettuce just picked. You can see all this nice, pretty green leaf on it before they trim it. Head lettuce is very good right now locally. Also, tomatoes. You've heard about some tomato problems with our local tomatoes. We are getting some wonderful cherry tomatoes, and out of Washington, where they've had absolutely gorgeous weather, beautiful, large red ripe tomatoes, tasty, coming in 39 to 59 cents a pound. So there are some excellent Northwest tomatoes this year, even though they may not be from the Eugene area. Also, we're getting into the squash season, butternut squash coming in now, 29 to 39 cents a pound. Very, very nice. Other squashes to follow. Over in the fruit department, more good news. Hot weather has just mean they're harvesting the cantaloupe and watermelon faster. Cantaloupe and honeydew all coming in now. Cantaloupe as low as 25 cents a pound. Same is true with honeydew very, very good quality. Locally, red delicious and golden delicious apples coming in strong right now. Expect to see higher prices on apples this year, as we're not going to have quite the apple crop that we did last year. Bartlett pear is just about finishing up, and we're into the new crop of plums, and these giant, beautiful plums are called president plums. And if you look closely, you'll notice they do bear a slight resemblance to Rani. How about that? Anyways, basically good news in the fruit department, good news in the vegetable department. Have a good week for Eyewitness News. I'm Terry Potassium. I can hardly believe it's end of summer and we're gonna kind of slip into fall right now. And fall, good things happening in fall, produce wise, over in the fruit department out of California, end of the melon season, although the cantaloupes and honeydews are still excellent right now, prices are very good, they'll start to escalate. Also, the same holds true on the grapes. We're seeing the end of the seedless grape and the red seedless grapes, but we're into Italias and blacks and rebeer grapes. Prices will start to escalate, but the grapes are still good. Locally, pears and apples. Beautiful, giant red delicious apples, golden delicious apples, the grave scenes are all finished, still getting some plums in, and pears. I told you about the Bartlett's. The boss pears are coming in now. If you've never tried a boss pear, it's B O S C. Try it, it's a russeted skin pear, excellent flavor, probably one of the nicest tasting pears you're ever going to have. That's boss pear. Also, avocados out of California, the end of the ha season, avocados are very good value right now. They'll be going up soon. Over in the vegetable department, locally, a lot of good things happening. Lettuce prices are going to be escalating because the lettuce season here is just about over. It's been very warm in California, so expect to see higher prices on lettuce, head lettuce, and leaf lettuce. But locally, corn, green beans, tomatoes, all coming on very strong. Corn just about over with. Same holds true with green beans. And the tomato crop, in spite of the blight, has been wonderful so far. Tomatoes running anywhere from 39 to 59 cents a pound. Very, very good quality. Finally, In the woods this time of the year, it starts to rain. We get into the chanterelle mushrooms. Everybody has regular mushrooms all the time, but if you've never tried a chanterelle, it's a wonderful mushroom, it's very meaty, excellent in soup, excellent saute. It's a little bit sweeter than your regular mushroom. They're found in Europe, that's where they come from, actually, originally, but they are found in the Oregon Woods. They're called chanterelles. A few of the stores handle them. They run two, three dollars a pound, and make sure they're fresh, but they're an excellent mushroom. Make sure you try them this week. So, all in all, a good week. Hope fall is as good to you as the summer was. Rye witness news. I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70629/file/156575#t=1034.81,1156.659
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70629/file/156575/transcript/87655/annotation/46
Speaker 27: Is hunger in the United States. First and foremost are the buying habits of the American public. When we buy fruits and vegetables these days, more of us want frozen or fresh produce than canned. Then there's the all-encompassing dilemma of high interest rates. They made it more expensive to sit on a large inventory. In the canning business, that's one of the hazards of the occupation. Since you process in a few months what may take a few years to sell. Sewer rates at the Eugene cannery are up 300%. The cost of steam is about six times what it was in the 1970s. And finally, Midwestern canneries, located closer to the big population centers, have become tougher competitors. AgriPac's problems are not unique. The entire fruit and vegetable canning industry's been going through a major shakeup. In the past several years, half a dozen of the Northwest's biggest canneries have shut down completely. Many of the growers who supplied those canneries were left out in the cold, forced to grow lower value crops on the high-priced land customarily used for fruit and vegetables. AgriPac took some drastic action to cut costs and stay alive. The most controversial was a wage rollback for employees. So controversial, in fact, that workers walked off their jobs for two weeks before agreeing to the salary cut. More recently, there's been a reduction in salaried employees and the creation of a whole new top management team headed by a brand new president. Paul Solari came to AgriPac three months ago after years as an executive with Del Monte.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70629/file/156575#t=1678.4,1779.17
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70629/file/156575/transcript/87655/annotation/68
Speaker 32: It's just really a an adjustment that the industry's going through, no different than in a lot of industries throughout the United States. My, it's nice outside. I sure love the fall, all the trees changing color. And we go through a lot of produce changes over in the vegetable department. What's happening? Well, going to the sweet corn, going to the green beans. What's coming on now? The fall vegetables. A lot of local broccoli and cauliflower coming in, very good buy. Also, local potatoes, leeks coming in for a nice warm soup. Other good buys, carrots locally, spinach, very good buy. Cucumber is still a good buy. Some prices are going higher. Tomatoes as high as a dollar a pound. Green peppers, they're all finished up. They're coming out of California. Same with zucchini. Those prices will be escalating. So there are some good buys in the vegetable apartment. Over in the fruit section, well, seedless grapes about finished up. Melons are about finished up. We are getting some good red emperor grapes with seeds coming in. 49 to 89 cents a pound. They're good. Best buy this week, bananas. They were 59 cents a pound two weeks ago. This week down to 29 cents a pound. A lot of bananas on the market. Out of the Pacific Northwest, apples of all kinds and pears remain an excellent value. Out of Texas, the grapefruit crop is coming in. Last but not least, pumpkin seasons upon us. Local pumpkins anywhere from seven to ten cents a pound. Decorative Indian corn coming in now, 40 to 60 cents apiece. Very nice for your table. And for those of you who want to get out of your gourd, decorative gourd's coming in about a quarter apiece. So all in all, it's a good week. Yesterday's kids from Texas and Illinois and California, Marines and sailors who'd come over here to try to do some good, because this wasn't training. This was it. They had just 26 days and a wake-up, as they call it, before they were going home. It was Sunday dawn, sack time. A big Mercedes dump truck crashed through a couple of gates and into the foyer of the barracks. The driver and everything else went up in the blast of a ton of high explosive. Lance Corporal Robert Calhoun of San Antonio was on the roof. We got up, and as soon as we stepped off, it was like, you hear about a thousand people, it seemed like screaming, help me, God help me. The Marine Corps is a small town. Everybody knows everybody. And today, as if their community had been ravaged by some natural calamity, the Marines were tearing the rubble apart, hoping this friend or that one might still be alive. But this disaster was man-made. The work of some fanatic. The best guess, and it's only a guess, is that it was somebody from a leftist radical group.
