Two years ago, one of Bhagwan's Rolls Royces was the grand prize in a raffle, a reminder that such gatherings were big money makers for the commune. There are no more parties in the hall where sannyasins used to celebrate Bhagwan's birthday. Rajneesh Mandir has become a warehouse full of second-hand furniture. It's all waiting to be sold to help pay off the commune's multi-million dollar debt. This year's birthday party was supposed to be a gala affair. It was advertised all over the world. But with the guru gone and the commune closing down, just 200 sannyasins gathered on the floor of a business office and paid their respects to a picture of Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh. But many Sinyazans started their partying last night, it was the last night they could use their currency cards because of bankruptcy action taken against the commune. Champagne corks were popping well past midnight, but this celebration was more personal and for some more poignant. If you're looking for some last minute gift ideas, why not give someone some nice fresh fruits or vegetables for the holidays. It's always the right size, generally the right color, never goes out of style. You can get a really nice gift for less than ten dollars and be creative. You could pick up a little basket, fill it full of Oregon hazelnuts, that makes a nice gift. If you have a gourmet cook in your life, How about a nice garlic braid that they can hang in the kitchen and use, you're on. Every time they take a braid of clove of garlic, they'll think of you. But really, the best idea, I think, is to go out and get a basket and go to the store and pick some nice, fresh, seasonal fruit and put together a fruit basket. There's good apples and pears, kiwi fruit, tangerines on the market. That'll make a really nice gift. If you've got a friend who's going to Hawaii for the holidays, pick some bananas, some pineapples, tropical fruits, some grapes. So all in all, you can make a really nice fruit basket for less than $10, and it's something that a person would really appreciate. A little tip, if you're going to give someone a fruit basket, make sure you buy fruit that's a little on the green side, meaning under-ripe, because it will ripen. You don't want to give somebody fruit that ripe right away, because they'll have to eat it real quick, and they'll all be gone. And finally, if your looking for a gift to give me, and you don't feel like giving me any fresh fruits or vegetables, I will always accept A 10-pound block of Belgian chocolate any time of the year.
