Giant department stores like Saks and plenty of exclusive smaller shops nearby. And in front, you'll always find plenty for sale out on the streets. It's cheaper, but remember you'll neither get an exchange if you need one nor a refund. For one thing, stay away from stores like this one with signs that trumpet a sale. It's the same old tune. They play it only for tourists. You'll hardly ever find a bargain inside. If you do want bargains, try a chain called Discomat for records, a place called The Strand for inexpensive books, and a shop called Mearns on Madison Avenue for goodbyes on men's and women's clothing. Another fun place is Macy's department store, they'll always check the newspaper for ads announcing a sale. You'll sometimes find one going on downstairs in Macy s cellar. It's an ifty place for kitchen goods and all sorts of little knickknacks. Now New York would not be New York without its specialty stores. One of the most famous being Hamacher Schlemmer on 57th Street. And finally try a place that's a great conversation piece. A number of Eugene residents find racist literature outside their homes. One month later, a black family in West Eugene receives a threatening letter. The note says racial purity is America's security. Civic leaders are shocked, and the Eugene City Council passes an ordinance against racial harassment. Now, some officials say racial harassment has died down, but many members of the minority community claim the exact opposite is true. The university community is the most ethnically diverse segment of Lane County's population. Yet like many other college campuses, this is a place where racism has reemerged. Some examples, like the increase in racist graffiti, are subtle. Others are not so subtle. During the past year, a minority teacher was forced out of the classroom by harassing remarks from a student. Threats have become more commonplace. One black university student living just off campus found his tennis shoes nailed to the side of his house one morning. With them was a note that read, nigger, go back to Africa. To some people, these incidents are evidence that this generation of college students has taken a giant step backwards. Well, let me tell you, terry potassium is golden rule of thumb. In the vegetable department, if it looks good, generally that means it will be good. I mean, if your broccoli is brown, obviously it's not fresh. And if the lettuce is all wilty, it's fresh. So if things look good and they feel good, that means they should be good now. Over in the food department, it a little different situation. Things like apples, they're graded by size and color. And though it doesn't always mean that it's better as sometimes a blemished grapefruit might be tastier than a non-blemished grapefruits. So that's kind of a pick and choose thing. And now that I've confused you even more, let's take a look and see what market conditions are this week. First, vegetable market out of California. Good buys this week, broccoli, 30 to 50 cents a pound. Cucumbers, three for a dollar. California corn coming in very nice right now a little high four four dollar, but very good also red and white potatoes Where are the blue potatoes? New crop, three pounds for a dollar, excellent quality. Locally, what's happening? Well, asparagus coming in now, $60 to a dollar a pound. Spinach, rhubarb, very, very good right now. Bringing you over to the fruit department, best buys this week. Still, grapefruit, very Good. But the best value this week, probably California strawberries, although there's a short supply, a lot of stores have them on sale, and the quality is excellent. So California strawberries are the best value in the fruit Department. Anyways, it was a good week for vegetables and a bad week for tax levies. But for Eyewitness News... They've done a pretty good job. We've got a pretty run of fish. I get into a few of them every year. One of the problems they have with them, though, and one of the unfortunate things is they have to turn the little steelhead smolts loose up the river just about the time general trout season opens in the spring. I've noticed on the river the last few days, several people putting these little steelheads in their creels. If you really need a fish, they're edible, but they're awfully small. They're bright and shiny and about nine inches long. Really too small a fish to eat. There's four different kinds of fish you can catch on the McKinsey right now that could all be considered a trout, and they're all legal to take as long as they're under 14 inches. You can catch the little steelhead smolts about nine inch, real bright and shining, and as soon as you stick him, he'll jump out of the water and begin to shake. You can tell right away that you got a little steel head. Probably should unlook him and release him. You can catch the big native red side, easily distinguishable by the red mark on his side, and their eyes are considerably larger than a planted fish. You can get a planted rainbow, and if you need a couple to eat, that's the fish to take home. Or you can catch a cutthroat on the Mackenzie now that's been established in here in the last few years, and they're real nice fish with a boxy tail and lots of little dark spots on them. If you catch one of those, don't hurt to put that back in the river, either. If you get out here on the Mackenzie having a good time though, hook a couple of these nice fish, keep your tip up. It's usually just $5 But how would you like to see a show half price? Head for the tickets booth on Broadway, where shows that aren't doing that well sell their unsold seats for truly half price.
