And after you have been playing long enough, it becomes part of your personality as well. And it's marked by then with certain flaws, for example, if you were to compare it to what is proper technique. But at that point, you begin to hear somebody you can identify, like Thomas Carlyle, who started in Germany with Bill Lawrence, places on frets like this. On a standard guitar, a tuned standard. Segovia's technique is entirely orthodox, and you hear it in what he doesn't do when he plays. John Williams' technique is very romantic and juicy, which Segovia doesn't like and most people seem to enjoy. Finally, for me, a technique is this guitar over here. Instead of a flat top like the 12 string, It's a car. Rises right here to a big bubble. This was built by a guy named Benedetto. For some reason these are an Italian tradition. Most of them have F holes here and they work by compression like a violin instead of by pull. What that means is that without picks you can get a much more fundamental note. These guitars with picks sound pretty crummy. But without them, they I think are about the best you can get. So this is a guitar I hated most of my life. The Dutch side, with the town of St Petersburg, is most charming. This is also the only port where the ship weighs anchor. The dock's not large enough for a liner, so you come to shore by small boat. St. Martins sports many shops, but also does well in the restaurant department. Instead of going back to the ship at noon, try either the Escargot or Pinocchio's. Escargot is French, will cost around $12. Duck and cherry sauce is supreme. Pinocchios can be skipped for eating, but do make some time to hear Jamaica Joe sing some of the last real calypso music left in the Caribbean. The shopping is everything from Gucci to Dior, and the new Amsterdam store is a good target. The ship's next target is St. Thomas. If you want to talk shop, talk St. Thomas. The daily items are really more expensive here, but you'll save a bundle on the luxury items. Take the time to look for a watch. You will probably never get better deals or the likes of Cartier and Seiko anywhere else in the world. Silver is an even better buy than gold. And perfumes can be half, or as much as half, what you pay in the States. Since we're talking about better than anywhere else, St. Thomas has Megan's Bay. It's been ranked the sixth most beautiful beach in the world. As you wend your way around the island, stop at Coral World. You will see firsthand from a submerged building the local tropical fish life. Tomorrow, we're going to take a trip that will not only include fish life, but perhaps the most spectacular day of your cruise. For Eyewitness News...
