This last week, this duck season's been closed. But in where we live in Oregon, all you've got to do is just wait a few minutes or change your hats. That exact same high water that's had those ducks scattered around for the last week or two has brought a bunch of fresh steelhead into the rivers. You know, the rivers are getting really good shape today and by the end of the weekend they're going to be in real good shape. Some of the south coast rivers are going to produce a lot of steelhead this weekend. You might want to get out there and try that. Or you can just wait until Monday and go duck hunting. All those ducks that have been collecting up on these puddles down here, we'd be able to get back to them Monday. Oh by the way, if you want to talk to me sometime about one of my tackle tips that I've given you here on television, or if you just want to stop and shake hands and swap a couple of fish stories, I'm going to be down at the Lane County Fairgrounds all weekend doing some seminars at the Eugene Boat and Sports Show. The district sunk a deep well on school property, but the water it produced proved to be laced with poisonous chemicals and not worth the expense of purifying. In the first weeks of November, the State of Oregon provided a $70,000 eminent threat grant for drilling another new well. But the grant's provisions required it to be administered by Lane County. This stipulation has held up the drilling with a shuffle of paperwork between Eugene and Salem, and has also forced a series of meetings between Rumsey and County Public Services Coordinator Peter Thurston. Thurstone told KEZI this morning, the red tape has finally come to an end, however. He's received the long-awaited agreement with the State Intergovernmental Relations Division and now is waiting only for the signatures of engineers to begin drilling. What kind of a year was it for fresh produce producers and consumers? Well, we know nationally the small family farm is on the decline, and produce prices and agricultural prices were kind of down this year. But here locally in Oregon, particularly in Lane County, the small-family farm flourished this year, produce prices were very good, production was up. Beginning in June with fruit. We had a very good year for strawberries, and also an excellent record year for raspberries due to a nice dry June this year and July also. This continued all the way on through fall. We had record crops of some apples and literally a bumper crop of pears. So for fruit producers with a couple of minor setbacks, 1986 was an excellent year. Over in the vegetable department, more of the same. Good news. Row crop producers because of the moderate climate lettuce, salad greens, squash, carrots, things of that nature all fared very well this year. The summer continued actually running into the fall with some very nice weather, and we had good crops of broccoli and cauliflower. Again, good weather in the fall meant that we had a very good tomato crop this year, nice red ripe tomatoes for a change. So all in all, 1986, was a good year, not only for the producers, but for us the consumers. We didn't see much increase in prices on fresh fruit and vegetables. Finally, if you're making any New Year's resolutions for 1987, make sure one of them is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables next year. Also, if your doing any heavy partying this week, and you're going to be consuming any fermented fruits, vegetables, grains, or otherwise, make sure you don't drink and drive. I want you to have a safe, happy, healthy new year. For eyewitness news.
