Mostly good news to report this week out of fruit and vegetable market. Over in fruit department. Some good values this week. California melons, very good. Cantaloupes, honeydews, particularly the cantaloupes running 29, 39 cents a pound, excellent quality. Other fruit out of California, peaches, plums, nectarines, grapes. Prices starting to come down sharply. Quality is very, very good right now. We'll be in the local peaches in about a week. Other highlights, tropical fruit, papayas and mangoes. Very seasonal, real good right now, under a dollar a piece. Over in the vegetable department, locally, a lot of things happening. This wet weather hasn't really hurt the vegetables as much as it hurt the fruit. But good things vegetable-wise, beets, cauliflower, lettuce of all kinds, green beans, out of Washington, Walla Walla, sweet onions. All very, very good, very reasonably priced right now. A lot of local stuff happening. Out of California, broccoli, very high. It's been down this week, 49-59 cents a pound. Also, a tomato glut right now. How about that? Tomatoes, 39-49 cents a pound. Very good quality, also. Finally, out of Washington, first corn is coming in. One way to tell if corn is good and the produce people in the supermarkets just love this. Peel your corn, take your fingernail, stick it in the end of the corn. If the corn pops, that means it's nice and fresh. If it doesn't pop, don't buy it. Corn's running about four years for a dollar right now, and it is good. So, all in all, a good week. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium. Okay.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551#t=244.25,329.29
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551/transcript/87578/annotation/16
Speaker 8: The newspaper man minced few words and took little time to get to the point.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551#t=343.61,346.97
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551/transcript/87578/annotation/17
Speaker 13: The register guard will begin morning publication September 12, 1983. But other professional journalists say if the guard's circumstances are like those of other Metropolitan Papers, there's another reason survival. Evening papers have been dying around the country while morning papers have flourished, and there are several reasons for that. One is obvious competition from television news. Breaking news, court rulings, and jury decisions often occur in the afternoon or evening. That's great for television news, lousy for evening papers. Another reason for a morning press run is the profound change in American lifestyle in the past two decades. Evening papers are designed for blue collar workers who leave for work early and come home early. But with the emergence of white collar workers, the evening paper has become less relevant, less timely for people who come home from the office at odd hours of the day. And then there are the advertisers, the bread and butter of the newspaper business.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551#t=368.43,418.27
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70605/file/156551/transcript/87578/annotation/19
Speaker 13: The newspaper will be in the home all day long from AM through to PM.
