In the Christian religion, of course, the birth of Jesus Christ is honored, and the hope therein is celebrated. That the birth a savior, that a message of eternal light should be heralded. In the darkest month of the year is no accidents. And that we on Christmas 1968 turn to these songs and to these rituals of hope is not at all unusual. For we hear those night sounds again, and that tribal campfire has once more emerged in our memories. But trouble is not all new to man, and neither is fear. Without trouble, we often lack action. Without fear. We would not know courage. We learn by contrasts, and fitful fate is the teacher. Out of this nettle danger, wrote Shakespeare, we pluck this flower safety. We are in the last hours of a harrowing, fearful, dangerous, and frustrating year. It must surely be recorded as one of the most dramatic years in the entire history of this republic. We need not leaf through the calendar's pages to remember. Our memories are green. With 1968's terrible antitheses of agony and joy, of death and life, of despair and hope. We have had our contrasts, and now we might ask, have we learned from them? Self-analysis, of course, is not easy, but the fluctuating pressures of this time on Earth demand that we practice self-analyzes daily. We have to be square with ourselves, we have to square with each other. We have to ask if we believe what we say and if we intend to live what we proclaim. Thomas Jefferson said, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just. Can we be that honest with ourselves today and that honest about our nations? Can we bring to reality the many difficult deeds that we need? We are beyond the luxury of vague promises. It is now that... We are required to translate our spoken beliefs into action. And those long revered and often saluted generalities are tough words to live for. The words of brotherhood, joy, peace, love, faith, humidity, honor, justice, equality, and freedom. But no one has ever said that progress or courage are easy. And no power that has ever emerged on the face of this earth. Has escaped paying a very high price for its pinnacle. The story of Christ and of Christ's church is a most moving example. And martyrdom was an action before martyrdom was a word. As this cataclysmic year ends, let us try to assess the history of ourselves and the history mankind. Perhaps in that contemplation, we can recognize the contrast, the contrast that will let us grow in knowledge and wisdom. And as we turn to the holy beliefs that renew and then sustain us let us pledge ourselves as individuals and as governments to a new year of dignity and responsibility we all have work to do and it's going to take all of us to do it the message for christmas nineteen sixty eight i believe is a message of hopeful awareness and reasoned joy There will be blazing Christmas fires and holiday banquets for most of us. There will bright gifts and fond reunions and certainly love regain. But for some, there will be none of these. Only the past standing unmasked beyond the fire lines. In this cast of mind then, can we not make this a time for ritual assessment? To see if we learn from what has happened. To see how really serious our pledges are. To see if we really understand and agree with those pledges, to see what needs to be done, and then each of us to find for himself his place in this picture. I think with that kind of honest stock taking, we may bolster the lasting and intelligent value of those sometimes too easy phrases. Those phrases all of us must certainly not allow to disintegrate into the jargon of small talk. The phrase is Merry Christmas. As governor of a state that is as free from corruption as any in the nation. I am indignant and hurt that all these tiny technicalities have been blown all out of proportion in an attempt to disenfranchise Oregon voters. I urge those who recommended this course to cease this effort so that Oregon's reputation will be not unfairly dragged through the courts and the United States Senate. As a matter of fact, I'm so concerned about this potential smear to Oregon that I'll go back to Washington and go back with a bipartisan team of election experts to assist in making the U.S. Senate fully aware of the ludicrousness of these charges. In my mind, the overriding consideration is the negative effect of any such contest upon the national image of the state of Oregon. Farm I have, which interestingly, interesting enough, was a farm on which Senator McNary had a great interest for many years, part interest in it. It was owned by his administrative assistant who became my administrative assistant when I first went to the Senate. He spent a considerable amount of time on that farm out in Maryland. We'll have to liquidate that. I'll have liquidate my apartment in Washington where I live. We've recently read the report of the Secretary of Transportation, the report he made to Congress on the role of alcohol in highway safety. And it says in part that alcohol has been found to be the largest single factor in fatal crashes. The overwhelming majority of auto crashes involving alcohol, says the report, occur during the late afternoon, evening, and night hours. And these findings are brought home to us and tragically documented in the highway death and injury cases and figures of the Oregon State Police. Officers of that crack police force will be patrolling the highways of our state in force on New Year's Eve. Their assignment, their prime purpose in being on the highways is your protection, so your cooperation is imperative. Obviously, somber soothsaying does not serve to accelerate the spirit of merriment that should prevail this holiday time. But perhaps a sobering thought before the party starts will somehow sideline the shattering sorrow that could come to the bereaved families.
