To the junior leaguers who run this store, it was simply the usual opening day after a summer closing. Well, maybe there were a few more people than usual, thanks to inflation. This thrift store is the only nonprofit consignment shop in town. Those with old goods to sell bring them here. The seller gets 70% of the asking price. The junior league takes the rest to help fund its charity programs. Prices here are about one-third of what you'd pay for new items. Just to give you an idea of some of the bargains you can pick up, here's a warm girls winter coat for only twelve dollars, or if it's a little boy that you need to outfit a UFO jacket here for only ten dollars, and of course the perennial favorite jeans, time designer jeans, only five dollars a pair. It's bargains like these that bring in parents looking to outfit their kids for school. One woman told us she'd been here on opening day for the last fifteen years, first clothing her own children. Now doing the same for her grandchildren. Other parents said they simply couldn't afford new school clothes. Junior leaguers say the bargains found here are almost like new. In fact, anything that's torn or damaged or dirty gets shipped off to Goodwill. Household goods, books, and toys are also for sale. The variety manages to attract not only back to schoolers, but also the elderly and college students. It also attracts something else you don't often see in stores, smiles at the checkout counter. Let's look over at the local fruit scene. First, I told you last week we're still getting some nectarines, Bartlett pears coming in now, Redhaven peaches just about finished up. We'll be getting into our Albertas and our Hales, which are better, canners. Some Italian prune plums, great for drying. Gravenstein apples, they're just about fished. We'll getting into some new crops of apples real soon. So just be patient if you've been waiting for those good red delicious apples. And our fruit of the week this week, last week was watermelon. This week it's cassava melons. These are grown locally. They're kind of similar to like a honeydew cantaloupe watermelon, kind of cross. Excellent light fleshed, meated melon. Try it. It's as low as $0.15, $010, $1.20 a pound right now. Very good buy. Looking over at the local vegetable market, we're getting some nice green peppers in now, green beans, zucchini, some wonderful cherry tomatoes. Local corn, still excellent. Local cauliflower. Cucumbers, eggplant. I don't know why they call them eggplant. I planted an egg this week. Nothing came up yet. And last but not least, the vegetable of the week, which my shirt was patterned after, bunched carrots. Carrots come a little later in the season here in Lane County in Oregon. Carrot crop is coming in good now. Bunched carrots now. Clipped top carrots later. Excellent quality. Good for eating raw or cooking up. Try some carrots this week for Eyewitness News.
