First off, I'd like to thank my amigos over La Pasada Restaurant for loaning me this umbrella today. And the vegetables, we're seeing a kind of revolution in the vegetables this week, some prices up, some down. What's up? Well, lettuce is up, leaf lettuce, green leaf romaine, red leaf, a little higher priced. Head lettuce is a good buy this week. Green and red cabbage also up as high as $0.30 to $0,40 a pound. Good values this week in the vegetable apartment, carrots, three pounds for a dollar. Artichokes is about a buck a piece, but giant artichokes, smaller artichoke will cost you less. Broccoli out of California, 40 to 50 cents a pound. And Mexican tomatoes, 30 to 60 cents a pound, depending on size, but very good quality. Locally, we're seeing some asparagus coming in now at about $1 a pound, rhubarb still coming in locally, but just about the end of the season, about three or four pounds per dollar on the rhubarb. Also yellow onions coming in, locally, although they're not the best quality, Texas onions will be better coming in soon. Swinging over to the fruit market. Navel orange season. It's about to go belly up. We'll be into Valencia soon, but the navels are still good. They're running a little bit more money, still good quality. Also out of Mexico, cantaloupe and watermelon. The watermelon's excellent, 25 to 35 cents a pound. And the cantaloupes running about 50 to 70 cents a pound. Doesn't look very good on the outside, but it's coming from thousands of miles away. You cut it very nice on the inside. Good meated. Very flavorful. Finally, it is Cinco de Mayo. You might want to have a Mexican meal. Some Mexican specialties this week, cilantro, Mexican parsley coming in, jalapeno peppers, tomatillos, which is a Mexican green tomato, and jicama, which the Mexican sweet potato. All available right now. Very, very good. A little Mexican meal with a little fruit to top off a real nice warm day. For Eyewitness News, I'm Pancho Potassium. Cinco de Mayo, excellent for your Mexican or Chinese cooking, and also fresh mint, great for that mint julep while you're watching the Kentucky Derby. So it's a great week for vegetable lovers. Both sides have invested months, even years, of their time and money, only they have to give it all to their lawyers when it's all over. But before you can determine whether legal services cost too much, you must know what you get for your money. The typical medium-sized organ law firm made $570,000 before taxes last year. Its lawyers charged an average of $68 an hour. For every hour they billed, $9.30 went to pay secretaries, receptionists, and bookkeepers. $8.60 paid associate lawyers, legal assistants, and law clerks. It cost $7.50 an hour for rent, equipment, and office supplies, and $4.90 for miscellaneous items. That means that $30.30 out of every $68 you paid that law firm went to pay its overhead. And are lawyers getting rich? The median pre-tax income for Oregon lawyers last year was $34,000. And there's the very real danger that equipment that makes it easier to crank out more paperwork will only encourage a bigger mountain of legal paper. A lot of the money you spend goes not to the lawyer but to the courthouse. It costs $63 to file a complaint in Lane County, $88 if it's a divorce. A three-day jury trial adds another $165, and there are writs, motions, service of process, and much more. But those fees pay only about one-fourth of what it costs to run the courthouse.
