All three ran a West Eugene chemical company called Eugene Scientific Incorporated, and they apparently were a major supplier of glassware and chemicals for local methamphetamine manufacturers. From their West 11th retail outlet, police seized thousands of dollars in glassware and small amounts of chemicals that could be used in meth production. It appears that the defendants used a rental warehouse about half mile away on Bailey Hill Road as their storage space. Law enforcement officials found some 80 drums of chemicals. Many, such as ether and some alcohols, were flammable and appeared to have been stored improperly. One investigator told us today there were enough raw ingredients for about 50 pounds of meth, which could sell for about $13,000 a pound. Most of the chemicals were loaded up today for transport out of our area. The inventory is not yet complete, so they can't put a dollar amount on the good seized. But all it takes is another infected fish, some water that's been infected with the parasite, or the droppings of a bird that's eaten infected fish. And these animals, especially animals in a hatchery like this, they could be in jeopardy. Their bodies could become deformed, or they could start chasing their tail, whirling. This is what causes the whirling. It's magnified several thousand times. This spore holds a parasite that infects the cartilage of young trout. By the time that cartilage becomes bone, the animal is grossly misshapen. Sometimes the tail of a rainbow trout turns black. At other times, the parasite eats part of the fish's system that helps it balance, causing the whirl in motion. The combination has killed many small fish and hatcheries around the world. Until last week, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho had been spared. A special sterilization program had kept the disease out, but no one expected the quarantine to last forever. Confirmed cases of the whirling disease have now been found in a private Northeast Oregon trout hatchery. OSU and state fish and wildlife researchers are now looking at fish from other hatcheries and streams in Oregon to see if the disease has spread. That means samples from more than 40 hatcheries in private trout ponds. They may find it, but they may never find out how it got here.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71063/file/157014#t=1727.31,1804.92
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71063/file/157014/transcript/88414/annotation/89
Speaker 36: We do know fish stray. Waves crashed inland in big thunderous sets, while above them, the skies were black, swollen with rain, and driven across the horizon by gale force winds. When all was said and done on Sunday, though, the storm looked much worse than its actual effects. These three homes in the Coronado Shore subdivision of Glen Eden Beach were the only houses to suffer major structural damage due to the storm anywhere between Astoria and Florence. Waves scoured away the land underneath the foundations of the houses and left their futures uncertain. Two of the homes were unoccupied at the time of the erosion, but the family of A.V. Caldwell was in the third. The Caldwels reportedly moved many of their belongings to the rear of the structure and out of all rooms that fronted the ocean. As for the rest of the coast, law enforcement officials say the only major difficulty from the storm was keeping sightseers from putting themselves in danger, while clogging up public roadways with their parked cars. The storm's massive waves caught several unsuspecting tourists and forced authorities to make occasional surf rescues, but the worst injury suffered by any of the overly curious sightseer was a broken leg. So overall, coast residents gave our New Year's storm relatively low marks on the Excitement Scale.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71063/file/157014#t=2439.89,2523.13
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71063/file/157014/transcript/88414/annotation/116
Speaker 12: I've lived here a long time, and there's been some higher tides than this.
