Today, it was disclosed that three low-level Communist Party functionaries have been punished for their part in bungling the immediate response. A special Soviet commission determined one man shirked his duties in helping evacuees. That official has been expelled from the party. Two others were reprimanded for neglect and failing to provide timely and accurate information to their superiors. The Soviets have acknowledged that officials at the damaged reactor did not respond quickly to the accident. And Western sources in Moscow believe the Kremlin leadership may have been kept in the dark for almost two days. That might explain the slow trickle of information that was released about the accident in its immediate aftermath. It may also explain why Soviet leader Globachev has said nothing about the subject, thus putting physical and political distance between himself and the problem. Soviet television last night showed these pictures, said to have come from villages within the 18-mile danger zone surrounding the plant. Officials said the radiation levels there are dropping, and that three of the remaining four reactors at the Chernobyl site will one day be restarted. So it's no surprise city officials want to help ease the county jail space problem, and they appear to be willing to do so in a big way. County Administrator Jim Johnson told the commissioners, Eugene, will give the county $400,000. And she comes back to New York after a summer in Europe to discover that after her father's death, her uncle is about to dismantle her father publishing business. And Maxie decides that he's not going to get away with it. I worked for Good Housekeeping on staff. I was at Cosmopolitan on staff, McCall's, and the Ladies' Home Journal. So I really do know the women's magazine business from the inside, and I also went back to New York before I wrote I'll Take Manhattan in order to talk to the top editors in town and the top financial people in the magazine business and to find out just exactly how maxi would go about creating a new magazine so that I got the most up-to-date information because this is a totally contemporary novel and it is meant to be and is an enormously amusing novel but you also manage to learn something from it. Okay, how would you compare it with the style of your other three books that have been enormously successful so far? Well, I'll Take Manhattan to Me is the most successful of all of my books from a point of view because I was very much at home with the material. I was at home with the period. It's, it's, it's today and I felt much more comfortable with today than I did with Miss Fowl's Daughter, so much of which took place in the 1920s and in France in a country that I know very well, but I'm not a native of it. So I, I think that this is my funniest book. And I think that as you go along as a writer, you learn your craft and you become much more self-critical and you start throwing out pages you might have kept on a former novel and you just say they're not good enough, therefore you write a better book each time if you're tough on yourself. Okay. What do you like best about being a novelist? Well, I think it's because I think really I like the work. I know that there's no way I could shut myself in a room. Seven days a week for a year and sit over a typewriter in an uncomfortable position with a backache if I didn't really enjoy what I was doing. The rewards of writing a number one best-selling novel are enormous. There's no doubt that there's a there's, a lot of money involved, there's lot of prestige, but if you don't like the work, you can't do it. It's just not Getting there, in the case of writing a novel, has to be almost 100% of the fun.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70966/file/156917#t=1512.03,1647.86
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70966/file/156917/transcript/88265/annotation/80
Speaker 27: Okay. A movie can't be more than an hour and fifty minutes, maximum two hours, and you just have to compress the story, I write big fat novels and there's no way that a movie could tell the entire plot. And give the richness of the characters in fact it's difficult to do it in a miniseries the thing to do ideally is to read the book and then watch the miniserie i understand that your husband is producing those miniserys yes he didn't produce scruples he was too busy with his own film production work but after scruple which contained a lot of material i had not written i asked him to please get into the act so that the characters would remain faithful to my characters even if the plot line occasionally twists and turns a little bit because the dramatic form is obviously going to be different than the novelistic form.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70966/file/156917#t=1690.77,1756.03
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70966/file/156917/transcript/88265/annotation/84
Speaker 27: Your first three novels, and now I'll Take Manhattan, promise to be huge sell-out as the first three were.
