Well, here it is, the middle of September, and the weather is stormy in other parts of the country, but it's still very, very beautiful here. These cool crisp mornings mean nice produce. Fruit-wise, well, we're just about the end of the somethings locally. The soft fruit season is nearing an end. Peaches and nectarines locally are just about finished up, although we are getting some out of Idaho, Washington, and California. And the quality on the soft fruit is still very good. We are getting some nice plums, Brooks Prune plums, president plums coming in locally. But the real story locally right now is the apple and pear season. That's just beginning right now. We're getting some Bartlett pears, they're the very first pears. They're a green pear that turn a nice yellow when they ripen. And we're also seeing the very first of the red and golden delicious apples. Looks like it's going to be a good year for apples. We've already had the gravin seams earlier, and now the golden red delicious. They'll usually come in about 59 to 69 a pound to start off, and then you'll see the prices start to go down in the next month. Looks like a good year for apples. Out of California, again, I told you we are getting some peaches and some grapes and some melons, and the melons have been very good. Grapes you're going to start to pay more money for as the season draws to an end over a dollar a pound again, but there are some very good buys on cantaloupes and honeydews. Vegetable-wise, well, vegetables, everything's coming locally. It's just amazing. Tomatoes, wonderful. Sweet corn about the end of the season, very good. Squash, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, green onions, lots of local produce. I say falls around the corner. The acorn squash for those cool evenings, a nice squash to bake, 29 to 49 cents a pound. Prices will drop on that. So all in all, produce is very good. The local produce, vegetables are excellent, and the fruit coming out of California and locally is very good. And the kids are back in school, so don't complain. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70814/file/156764#t=726.82,834.67
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70814/file/156764/transcript/87674/annotation/37
Speaker 20: You are hearing the actual sounds of an emergency medical team working on a heart attack victim. Today we'll go down in history here as the Chinese and the British have finally signed an agreement for the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. Hong Kong television was saturated with special reports about the history of the former Crown Colony, and the mood appears to be cautiously optimistic. The agreement calls for the continuation of capitalism in Hong Kong for 50 years after the Chinese takeover in 1997. And that is being described as the best possible settlement available. However, some people are concerned about the presence of Chinese troops after 1997 as agreed to under its terms. Meanwhile, the Oregon Trade and Friendship Mission is on the home stretch. Details of the final agreement with Fujin Province in China are now becoming available. And those include specific economic agreements in areas including forestry, engineering, and construction, educational and cultural exchanges, and agricultural research and crop development. Governor Atiya appears tired from the 21-day journey, but he can also claim his mission to China and Japan has been successful.
