He chooses non-actors, gave them very little indication about what they were doing and and then would while the camera was shooting, he would attempt to tell them what they were doing at that moment, and in a sense, by telling him while the camera was rolling, these people being themselves and really not having prepared any kind of, of any prepared idea about who they were playing. Matt, who played Christ, of course, knew he was playing Christ, but he would say, all right, now you turn around, go over there, now get mad. And Pasolini found that startling them, startling them this way provoked and a kind of existence of itself. And possibly any one of the other Italians, and probably the most important in the use of the non-actor was the sica Vittorio De Sica. We've all seen Bicycle Thief and Shoeshine. Few of us know Umberto D in this country, but De Sica took non-actors, people off the street, professors, carpenters and linked them together.
