I supported that move in committee because I think it is very important that the final discussion of this bill should be before the American people. So the American public opinion can be brought to bear upon the problem. Now, I want to say that the Landrum Griffin bill in the present format is and is not in the interest of Oregon businessmen or businessmen elsewhere in the nation. I say that because I've heard so much from businessmen urging me to vote for the Landrum Griffin bill without change. First, let me say that in committee we have made some changes in the Landrum bill. Those of us on the Senate conferees have made 42 modifications in the Kennedy bill in the direction of the Landrum bill. But I do not propose to make the final legislation 100% Landrum legislation. And for many reasons. But let me mention one to the businessmen that may be listening to this telecast. For example, the Landrum bill proposes that the so-called no man's land case, that is those cases that are not now handled by the National Labor Relations Board, and therefore no decision in them can be obtained, shall be decided by state courts in accordance with state law. What's the matter with that? Well, I'll tell you what's the matter with it. It's an indirect amendment to the Interstate commerce clause of the Constitution. It discriminates against northern labor in favor of employers and lower standard labor states of the South. And no northern businessmen should be supporting that. In fact, the New England senators are beginning to wake up.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141315/file/261270#t=127.05,238.26"},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141315/file/261270/transcript/75896/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What will happen to them if this no man's land proposal is adopted? What position am I taking? I'm supporting the position of Senator Prouty, a Republican from Vermont, who really proposed a modification of the Morse Amendment in committee. It proposes that these cases shall be handled by the state courts, but in accordance with federal law. Why is that important? So that you can have a uniformity of justice throughout the United States in the handling of labor cases. It is unfair to northern employers, as well as the Northern Labor, to adopt a policy that will play right into the hands of southern employers who maintain low labor standards from the standpoint of competition. It's not in the interest of your I can businessman. My job as your senator is to sit here and hold tough in support of a basic principle of American justice, and that is there shall be a uniform application of the law across the country. And I hope we can succeed in getting that instruction to the conferees from the Senate.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141315/file/261270#t=238.26,305.22"}]},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141315/file/261270/transcript/75896","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["English [Transcript]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2300/collection_resources/141315/file/261270/transcript/75896/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"subtitling","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/075/896/original/transcript_1739819679.vtt20250217-1195066-qx5342.vtt20250217-1195066-qx5342?1739819679","format":"text/vtt","language":"en"},"target":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/075/896/original/transcript_1739819679.vtt20250217-1195066-qx5342.vtt20250217-1195066-qx5342?1739819679"}]}]}]}
