It's the focal point of the nation's economy and the supplier of its sleaze. But that's New York, a city of extremes. Early morning joggers run through the wilds of Central Park, and just a few blocks away, rush hour madness runs rampant. Be careful not to get lost in the middle. Excuse me, could you help? The city is always teeming with people. More than eight million are crammed inside and around these buildings. And if it's a quiet vacation you're after, New York is not for you. It's a little less noisy up here, though a little windier. I'm standing at one of the first places you should go to if you've never been to the city before. It's the observatory at the Empire State Building, 86 stories above New York City. Admission is $2.50 for adults, less for children. It's a good way to map out your stay here, and all this week we'll show you how to survive New York, how to enjoy its sights, how to take in its culture, how to walk around safely, but for starters, how about just getting around its streets? We've got so much good fishing right around here, it's impossible to report on it. And even worse than that, it's impossible to do it all. One of the things I like to do right now, though, is try to head off some of these big salmon coming up the McKinsey. I've got reports that there's good numbers of fish coming over the falls at Oregon City, and they're going to be coming right up the McKenzie here. Gonna see me out here in the afternoons chasing them a little bit. One of the things that makes salmon fishing so neat in the Mackenzie is I can run out here and fish thirty minutes or an hour in the afternoon or thirty minutes, or an an hour, in the morning. Or if you have to fish with a drift boat, sometimes it takes you a couple hours to make a short drift. But the leading edge of this run of fish that's in here right now are real nice big bright fish right out of the ocean. They're fun to catch a forty or fifty pound fish in the river right here. You don't get many 40 or 50 bounders, but a lot of 10s and 15s. Right here in town, this is probably one of the best holes on the river. You're going to see guys using heavy cackle, something like this bait here. And just back troll it in the current if you got a motor, if you've got a drift boat, just roll backwards. I hope to see you out there on the rivers, hook one of these big boys and keep your tip up. The blast devastated a 150-square-mile fan-shaped area to the north and northeast of the volcano. 1,300 feet of the summit was erupted into the sky, and a layer of ash covered the northwest while a huge ash cloud circled the globe. As snow melts from the volcano over the next few weeks, Searchers will resume looking for evidence of the 25 people still listed as missing after the catastrophic eruption. The official death toll now stands at 35. Of the missing 25, 18 are classified as presumed deceased based on information that placed them near the peak. Savage crews are still picking up the pieces from the May 18th eruption. Loggers are playing pick up sticks with the timber the shockwave tossed across Mount St. Helens slopes. There are those who griped about working in a volcanic area, but says one foreman, if it weren't for the mountain, we probably wouldn't be working. The US Army Corps of Engineers warns that a lack of funds to continue dredging volcanic muck from the Toutle and Cowlitz Rivers downstream could raise the threat of flooding in coming years. And Craig Weaver, a US Geological Survey scientist, warns that a newly discovered seismic zone near the mountain will someday cause major earthquakes in the Northwest. The lava dome in the volcano's crater continues its growth, sporadically interrupted by minor eruptions. Burlington Northern Railroad on Monday donated the square mile at the top of the mountain to the federal government. Area residents have long since swept the rest of the peak out of their yards and into the gutter. Some early entrepreneurs in the Northwest made good money off the mountain, but many have since folded. Most gift shops no longer carry Mount St. Helen's ash or Mount St Helen's t-shirt. And businesses near the peak are still hurting from the loss of the usual summer tourist traffic. They say it will be a slow recovery. The traffic hardly ever moves, so don't even think of getting behind a wheel. New Yorkers drive like madmen anyway. The safer bed is to walk. But the people who bought the ranch are part of a religious order, followers of the Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh of India. And the city they want on this ranch, 20 miles out of Antelope, Oregon, would be called Rajneeshpuram. In Hindi, that means expression of the Rajneish. The Roshneeshee, as they call themselves, plan to turn this land into wheat fields, orchards, and vineyards. A self-sufficient farm that will support more than 2,000 people. Four hundred Roshniishee are working at it now. They claim their investment is already more than 15 million dollars. But they also say their efforts are being handicapped by Oregon's strict land use laws. A problem they tried to solve yesterday. 154 registered voters at the ranch. All 154 of them registered Republicans. Went to the polls, and voted unanimously to incorporate Rajneeshpuram as a city. Farmland zoning means the Rajneeshi can only farm the big money.
