As workers were laid off, as businesses closed their doors for the last time, the entrepreneurs who were still afloat grimly batted down the hatches. Many began casting about in desperation for a way to fill the void in their orders left by a sickly economy. Their local markets, and in many cases their national markets, had dried up. Those who were not content with ground beef instead of steak for supper began to think more about the markets overseas. Traditionally the province of huge multinational corporations. It was certainly a way to keep from going under, but how to make the connection, how to overcome the vaguely uncomfortable feeling that comes over most people at the mention of the words international trade. The overseas market has certainly heard of Oregon. Our timber has been a staple of the building trade in Pacific Rim countries for years. An indication to our people grow in popularity. No less an authority than George Warehouser says industry growth must come from overseas sales. And the Northwest will not dominate the U.S. Timber market ever again. There are no figures available on total Oregon exports, but here are estimates for our four highest volume export categories. A total volume figure often banded about a 3.8 billion dollars refers to the value of goods shipped to the multi-port Portland Customs District and includes money products shipped from other states. But, as you can see, foreign business is substantial for Oregon. Who gets that business? It's not just the big boys, but it's not the faint of heart or the uncommitted either. As you'll hear in a few minutes, export marketing has its own book of rules. But some of those rules are changing, as with President Reagan's new Export Trading Company Act of 1982. Local government, too, is trying to help things get moving overseas, because the benefits hit very close to home. Governor Atiyah says one of every nine manufacturing jobs depends upon exports. And every million dollars of new exports creates 40 new jobs. That's money in your pocket. That would be a nice way to end, but one more thing bears mentioning. If the United States is beginning to pull out of its recession, many other countries are not, which means they have less money these days to spend here. As a trade delegate from one of the biggest Japanese corporations put it,
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70526/file/156472#t=56.39,189.61
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70526/file/156472/transcript/86781/annotation/2
Speaker 2: Japan are also suffering a lot. Some of those findings shed an interesting light on the way the state workers' compensation company did business. The first allegation was that the salaries of many safe executives were raised substantially after it became a public corporation, and that many of those salary discussions took place in executive session contrary to the advice of the attorney general. The auditors agreed, finding that many salaries had doubled, but were still comparable to those of private insurance carriers. Another charge was that Safe gave a payroll processing contract to a subsidiary of a bank affiliated with one of its board members, Leroy Livermore. That charge was found to be true but not improper. However, the private contract cost Safe substantially more than its previous state service. A more serious allegation was that a Safe vice president, Dave Davidson, bought a new car at a fleet discount through the company. Not only did the auditor substantiate the charge, They questioned whether the purchase violated an Oregon law prohibiting public officials from using their office for personal financial gain. There were also charges that SAFE board members repeatedly violated Oregon's conflict of interest laws. The auditors say that may be technically true, but difficult to prove. And one allegation even involved a local business. That charge was that SAFe allowed the Murphy Logging Company to use its own lawyers while billing safe for their fees. At the same time, other clients were required to use SAFE's own staff lawyers. The audit substantiates the charge and says the practice may have doubled the agency's legal costs in some cases. Here's how it works. By adjusting state tax brackets to fit with Reaganomics, the plan would raise an additional $240 million. Another $60 million comes from changing tax withholding schedules, and $190 million would be raised by extending the cigarette tax and other temporary tariffs set to expire this June. Today, I'm going to tell you how to pick nice, fresh fruits. First of all, apples. OK, it's getting late in the apple season. Lots of apples around. They're starting to cost you more money. Small apples, however, will cost you less than large apples. And you can see, apples are all graded by size and color. Mostly you want to get into your extra fancy apples now because they're going to be a better quality. Your smaller apples might run three pounds for a dollar. Your large apples are going to run 59, 69 cents a pound. So you can save money on smaller apples. The quality generally will be just as good. Over in citrus, here's something that's really interesting. Oranges, navel oranges. Now the skin on a small navel orange is actually thicker than the skin in a large navel orange. Therefore, it doesn't pay to buy small naven oranges. They might be a little bit less money. But you get much more meat in a large navel orange. And until the season gets late, large naples are still very, very good. Same thing with grapefruit. Look, we've cut these grapefruit open. Now, don't pay attention to color, because one of these are Texas and one of these are Indian River, Florida. So the flavor is going to be very good on both of them. But the small grapefruit's got just as thick of a skin as the large grapefruit, again, larger grapefruit are going to give you more for your money. So there you know about citrus. Now, avocados. Interesting thing about avocados, forget about the skin. We're going to talk about the pits. The pit on a small avocado is going to be the same size as a pit on the large avocado, believe it or not. So again, you want to buy medium to large size avocatos. You get more meat for your money, so to say. Finally, pineapples and tropical fruit. Pineapples are a fruit people have a lot of confusion with. They're picked when they're relatively green and shipped over. They don't ripen any further because They don't have any carbohydrate. So pineapples are going to be ready to eat right in your store. In fact, they even put these little helpful hints on them. So pineapple, look at it. If the color looks good, if it's got a firm body, and it smells OK, pineapple's going to good. You can't really judge a pineapple. They're very difficult. So now you know how to select some good fruits and vegetables. And I hope you save some money and have a good week.
