Let's take a look, see what's going on in the fruit and vegetable market. Locally, Newtown apples coming in right now. You all know Red and Goldenlicious are in. The Newtowns are coming in. Excellent apple for eating or baking. Tart, crisp apple, prices are a little high. They will be coming down. Texas grapefruit also coming in now. New grapefruit, very good quality. Prices are a a little higher, but the Texas grapefruits are some of the best. Out of California, pomegranates and persimmons. Very good this week. Prices are very good on both. Go out and try some. Let's take a look over the vegetable department. Locally, things are finishing up. We're still getting some beautiful red, green bell peppers coming in. Sweet corn still coming in, although it's just about the end of the season. Out of California, tomatoes, local tomatoes are all finished up. California tomatoes coming in now. Much higher price, but pretty good quality and relatively good flavor. Also, locally, we're getting some good squash, butternut, Danish acorn. Excellent for baking, steaming, whatever you want to do with them. Actually, pumpkins also coming in right now. Great big pumpkins for carving jack-o'-lanterns. Little tiny sweet pie pumpkins for your pies only, these pumpkins. Excellent because the meat won't be as coarse and a lot sweeter in these pie pumpkins. You'll pay more money, but you get a better pumpkin. Finally, I've had a lot of calls for my fruit fly remedy. Cold outside, they're coming inside. Remember, take a little bottle, fill it about halfway with some old red wine vinegar. Put a little dish soap in it. Little fruit flies will just kind of fly happily right into it and drown themselves. No more fruit flies. The county's revenue from state sources is also down, but other local revenues are up. All in all, the bottom line is $538,000 below expectations, the second problem may be even more serious according to Morgan. Even though the county departments are holding the line on spending so far this year, Morgan says the county needs to come up with almost $2 million in additional savings. He says the County needs a minimum of a million dollars in cash to carry over into next year's budget. On top of that, the county's departments will have to raise another $625,000 by not filling vacancies during the year. And as we told you yesterday, the County intends to save at least another $200,000 by a major reorganization and consolidation of departments. Altogether, that totals $1,825,00. June Kanori and her partner, Susanna Lee, say they've always loved the taste of a loaf fresh from a brick oven. So two years ago, the two set out to duplicate the process without the kiln. The result is planned pottery, unglazed stoneware that takes in cooking heat and moisture and redistributes it later on. Kanori says the bread, pie, and pizza pans, along with the special oven baking tiles, not only makes the best bread she's ever tasted, but saves energy, up to 50% over that of a conventional oven. The key is in the cooking. After the pottery absorbs all the heat, The oven is then turned off, and we use the stored heat to finish the baking process, which takes about 12 to 15 minutes. Once the stoneware surrendered its stored heat, the bread comes out fully cooked with a brown crust. Tracy Berry, Eyewitness News.
