Oregonians want a United States senator who will be concerned with national and international issues, but also one who will remember which state he represents all during his term, not just in an election year. Democrats tell me they want a new candidate to take on Senator Hatfield, someone who can heal the wounds of the past. Not one who will stir up old animosities. They want a candidate who is young enough to have many years in the Senate ahead of him, enough years to build up the influence, and seniority crucial in getting things done for Oregon. As a candidate for the United States Senate, I will be involved in many of these same issues. I will continue to speak out against concentrations of economic power and will work for greater competition to ensure the future of independent business and family farms. I will work fairness and justice in the marketplace and better representation for the consumer viewpoint. I will look for an Oregon with clear mountain streams and forests full of game and with an economy which to allow Oregonians. To have jobs and payroll so they can afford to enjoy the outdoors. If elected, I will be in a position to work for peace in the world, peace in this land, and conditions which allow peace within ourselves. My general position is I'm very, very much afraid of any restrictions on free collective bargaining. I think that the American system works much better when labor and management have the opportunity of solving these problems by themselves with the greatest amount of persuasive authority by the government, with the great amount of talking by the Government pointing out the public interest. The team, it means quite a bit, first of all it means instead of being a very, very small team we now become an average size team. This helps your rebounding to start with, I think it'll also help us quite a bit defensively just to have Al's size and ability to reject and block some shots underneath the basket. Even more than in the area of rebounding and defensively, I think it could help us offensively. If other teams must honor our inside game and collapse a little bit to concentrate on now, I thin it has to help the outside shooting of Rusty and Dowie and Kenny and Chris and all of us remove some of the pressure that we've been receiving outside.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678#t=233.67,287.19
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678/transcript/79680/annotation/10
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678#t=287.75,290.21
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678/transcript/79680/annotation/11
Speaker 5: Well, I think it's hard to do, Paul, in that he only played 20 minutes last year and he's had to sit out the first half of this year and now really is starting out as a sophomore would start out, experience-wise. We also would like to put this in perspective and recognize that no university, so far as I'm aware, has met the standards satisfactory to these compliance officers. And that we're really also talking about a national social problem, which affects every area of life and every kind of business and occupation. This, however, does not mean that we as university officers are to be excused. Rather, we, it seems to me, have the responsibility to take a position of leadership. And hence, in the employment and recruitment of minorities, and the employment and recruitment of female employees, we want to do that which is fair and equitable and proper. We have full compliance in the sense that everyone is aware of and concerned about and attempting to deal with this problem. The people of oregon deserve a Department of Justice in which opinions are based on an even-handed interpretation of the law and concern for the public good without regard to special interests or to political expediency. We submitted a budget of approximately $25,000 some odd dollars to the Student Senate with inclusion of all athletics. This was the baseball and so we're talking about dropping for 72- 73. They didn't at this time feel that they had the proper finances to allocate us better than $20,000. Of money and they're going beyond their funds that they've had. We've never established a base. We feel quite happy with the student senate. They're trying to establish a base of approximately 20,000. I think also that if they can find new ways of financing for themselves extra money that they might come through and we would still keep these sports. We're still hopeful. I know the board last night was not exactly happy with the idea of dropping sports that we already had in the program. We certainly as a staff and athletic... Staff and physical education staff are not happy with this idea. The student senate does not like the idea of dropping athletics. It's not a firm commitment at this time. How do you feel about the future of overall athletics here at LCC? Well before we've always had not enough money, too many sports, not enough money here at Lane and this is of course a problem in athletics throughout the whole state and the country providing proper finances for athletic programs. I think we're getting better. This 20,000 will be the largest we've had from Student Senate. Last, this past year, we had 17,600. And if we can eventually get up to 25,000, 26,000 excuse me, it would be plenty. As far as we see now, of course, there's always cost inflation, cost of referees going up. I'm hoping that you'll see some areas in there that will raise some questions and then when you're through before we into that. The legislature wanted to create an atmosphere. That made it difficult for businessmen to operate in violation of these standards and I think they've done that and the first thing they did was to create some private remedies and basically there were no specific private remedies before there were remedies all right but they were very difficult to pursue because they were in contract law or tort law or some other area law that made very difficult for it to pursue at least as to things that didn't involve a large amount of money. So, What the legislature did was provide a minimum damage situation, so that if a private party sues a merchant or a retailer for violating one of these acts, if he can prove any damages at all, any damages, he can recover $250 damages. Well, that makes it worth his while, you see, and it makes it a little more difficult for the merchant to violate the law with impunity, because he knows that there's only a few dollars damages or a few of injury involved. We probably have right now 15 to 20 files in our office that should be pursued in one way or another. And it goes largely, it's not the reputable businessmen that we're getting a large number of complaints on. We get complaints, but most of those complaints regarding people that are running a good reputable business are marginal complaints. And they might involve at the outset practice, but it's normally pretty easily cured. A lot of them involve shoddy merchandise. And that's not in our area.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678#t=3378.37,3497.18
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69269/file/155678/transcript/79680
["English
