That story picked up about five years after a nuclear armageddon, and among the things it chronicled was the murder of Max's wife and child by a scavenger motorcycle gang and Max's own eventual disappearance into the more desolate than usual Australian Outback. Things have not improved any in the Road Warrior. Max is even more of a loner than before. Living in a world where a human life means nothing if it stands between a scavenger and a tank of petrol. Gasoline, what there is of it, equates to power in this territory. During the course of the film, Max is talked into driving a tanker out of the wilderness for a clan that doesn't like its environs too terribly much. The result, lots of gore, and a 45-minute chase scene that should satisfy the most die-hard demolition derby fan. I have trouble saying whether I like or dislike the Road Warrior. Like its predecessor, Mad Max, it operates on an interesting premise with decent directing. But I feel the storyline was short up in places with more violence than was really necessary. That's where I think a lot of people are not going to enjoy Road Warrior. This is certainly no mad slasher film, but there are enough deaths and disfigurations to put off a lot of members of the movie going audience. My recommendation, if you think you can deal favorably with 95 minutes heavily laced with violence, you might be intrigued by the premise behind The Road Warrior. Otherwise, I'd wait until it comes out in paperback. Well of course this kind of relationship sometimes i is subject to policy changes on the part of one government or the other. And I think the recent tension between the two countries mainly stemmed from the US government's policy toward Taiwan and more specifically its decision to sell arms to to Taiwan. So whenever a foreign government tries to impose its will on China in so far as its internal affairs is concerned, it's always it would always inevitably arouse very strong response very strong feelings among the Chinese people. Naturally the Chinese government hopes that all countries in the world would follow policy of peace and stability in the interest well a policy in the interests of world peace and stability. And no country should resort to armed force in resolving international disputes or problems. So if every country in the world upholds this principle then even if the United States government has a very strong military power it would not pose threat to other countries. In this sense China is not worried about the military power of the United States. In view of the expansionist policy of the Soviet Union I think probably China both China and the United States are are very much concerned about that. So in their relationship I think China and the United States share some kind of strategic interests in stemming the hegemonist policy of aggression expansion on the part of the Soviet government. Stringfield Building Materials warehouse went up in that three-alarm blaze which pulled in firefighters from surrounding communities. The damage has been set at nearly a third of a million dollars. The investigation into its cause continues, but owner Gene Stringfield says even though he was losing money, he's not about to give up. Lane County, already reeling from the impact of various budget deficiencies, heard this week it must refund $2.1 million to railroads because of over-assessment on their property taxes. Very early Thursday morning, a young man held off police at gunpoint from inside his house. William Wallace had his two and a half-year-old son with him, and he had allegedly threatened his wife. It took Lawman four hours, but they talked Wallace out. There were no injuries. If you are an average household power user in Eugene, you can look forward, if that is the word, to paying another eight bucks a month, a hundred a year. Springfield ratepayers will be hit even harder. The average bill will go up $13, and that adds up to an extra $150 a year. Local utility officers take pains to point out that they have no choice but to go along. Our state utility commissioner wants the governor to appeal the BPA increase. But today all river traffic was stopped well upstream. For 12 hours, this section belonged to a construction crew building a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Willamette just south of Beltline Road. The bridge will also carry a 54-inch sewer pipe and phone and power lines. In fact, it was the need to get sewage from Springfield to the new regional treatment plant that gave birth to the multipurpose bridge. In order to close the river today, the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission had to get a special permit from the Coast Guard. It was easy to see why the river would be unsafe once workers began to move one of the 50-ton cement beams across the Willamette. Like a jigsaw puzzle piece, the beam had been custom made to fit its designated space. That work was done several miles upstream in Harrisburg. The river will be open to traffic again tomorrow morning, but the construction crew is still facing another deadline.
