Just got done running in the Boston Veggie Thon, finished in first place. Boy, am I hungry, and it's a good week for fruits and vegetables. Let's take a look over in the fruit department first. Best buy is this week. Tropical Pineapples out of Hawaii, running about $1 apiece. It's about the end of the naval orange season. They're running about 3 pounds for $1. Still very good quality. Apples and pears coming in right now. Look for CA. That means controlled atmosphere. You'll pay a little more for these apples or pears, but they'll be better quality. Bananas, they're going to be up a little bit this week, about 40 to 50 cents a pound for bananas. Best buys in the fruit department. Cantaloupes out of Mexico, very, very nice for this time of the year. And strawberries out of California, running from 60 to 80 cents a basket. Swinging over to the vegetable department. A good week for an after-run salad. Lettuce, of all kinds, finally come down in price, 40 to 60 cents ahead. Spinach, local right now, very, very nice, 30 to 50 cents a head. Carrots out of California, a good buy. Tomatoes out of Mexico, don't buy those Florida tomatoes. Mexican tomatoes, much better, 40 to 60 cents a pound, depending on size. Locally, radishes, green onions coming in. Also rhubarb, a little rhubarb strawberry pie maybe. People have been complaining about onions. The yellow onions locally have been very soft. Squeeze your onions a little bit. Onions will be going up in price. They'll be Texas onions. They'll better. Finally, the vegetable of the week out of California, cucumbers. These babies are about three or four for a dollar. Good size. The skin's a little bitter this time of the year, but they've been very, very good and much better than the Mexican cucumbers which we've been seeing. So all in all, it's a very good week for fruits and vegetables. For eyewitness news, I'm Alberto. Thanks for calling me off. I mean, Terry potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70389/file/156333#t=193.86,292.92
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70389/file/156333/transcript/86421/annotation/18
Speaker 5: Twice in just two weeks, the county state and federal flags have disappeared from Harris Hall. A new ordinance would limit the growth of the county's general fund spending to an index based on increases in population and inflation. Any excess revenues would be formally committed to special funds with specific purposes. Number one would be a revenue stabilization fund. Otherwise known as a rainy day fund, the kind of bankroll the county wishes it had now. The board is expected to order that fund to be based on at least 10% of current ONC timber revenues or a minimum of one and a half million dollars. Pure elegance with formalized service. A piano lounge is tranquilizing after dessert. Also elegant is the half shell. It specializes in seafood, but it too is expensive, about $20 per person with wine. Pleasant, but can be found anywhere dining is provided in the major hotels. The fair is bringing the meal prices up. And of course, many eating establishments are being set up in the fair site itself. Nightlife will be offered at the fair too, but there are plenty of entertainment spots in town. President Kennedy replaces it with a new policy called flexible response, the threat to use conventional forces to meet a Soviet invasion of Europe, backed by nuclear weapons, including those based in the United States. The 60s also find the two superpowers eye-to-eye over Soviet missiles in Cuba. But America, with its superior nuclear arsenal, prevails. The missiles are removed. In the 1970s, the Vietnam War ends, and Watergate begins. Lines at the gas pumps, and America celebrates her 200th anniversary. Meanwhile, the Soviets achieve rough equality in nuclear weapons, and the 70s become the decade of nuclear arms control. SALT I codifies the balance of terror. Both sides seem to accept the fact they can destroy one another. Both sides are vulnerable. President Carter follows up the process with SALT II signed in Vienna. But the decade of D'Todd ends with new doubts as Soviet armor rolls into Afghanistan Christmas, 1979. I don't know. In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan takes office with a decidedly different view of the Soviets and their nuclear intentions. Reagan calls the Russians liars and cheaters. Furthermore, he maintains the Soviets do not accept the concept of mutual vulnerability and that they've adopted a policy to fight and win a nuclear war. The administration's evidence? At the time, officers at the stakeout were unsure whether her son, 53-year old Gerald Horage was still in the house.
