As many as 14 residents at a time are given up to three days out of the rain with no strings attached. After three days, guests are expected to help with the chores and attend half-hour Bible sessions. In the last few months, the type of people who come to the mission for help have changed. Some are from out of state coming here to look for work, only to find that Oregon's economy is worse than the states they came from. Others are battered wives, and still others are middle-aged couples who are down on their luck for the first time. There are not only a different type of people coming here, there are more of them. So owner Maxine Matlin has leased the top floor of a downtown tavern to provide up to 50 more beds for her clients. At first glance, the site seems ideal. In the letter is a list of complaints about Maxine Matland, and the thrust of those complaints is that she has unfairly taken advantage of employees and residents of the mission, unfairly taken advantage financially and otherwise.
