The squalls have turned roadways into stream beds and have filled runoff ditches with swift moving water looking for a way into the McKenzie, Willamette and other local rivers. According to the Weather Service, two Eugene area rivers are currently up in the Mohawk outside Springfield. The Siusla is said to be only about a foot under flood stage. And Lane County Sheriff's deputies are keeping an eye on the Mohawk. Although those two rivers had the heaviest storm flows, they were far from the only tributaries in western Oregon to jump up near their banks. Camaswell Creek near Questwell had Rickett Road completely submerged under rainwater. The wet stuff kept some from trying to cross it, but others took it as a challenge for pickups. Roads weren't the only things in jeopardy from the pounding rain. Several low-lying homes in the region have found themselves suddenly ringed by moats, while other homeowners who built above river banks now find their backyard submerged and water surging up close to their porches. Despite the ominous look of many local rivers, though, weather officials don't expect flood stage to be reached anywhere in the valley over the next few days. Continued rain is predicted for the early part of the week. But it's supposed to be more of the shower than torrential downpour variety.
