There's been a real controversy about steel shot and whether they'll actually kill a bird as well as lead shot will or not. But us waterfowl hunters may as well get ready. In a couple of years, anywhere the federal government has anything to do with us shooting waterfoul, we're gonna be using steel shot. It's already written down. But I've got some good news I think. I've never done any real extensive testing of steel shot. And I haven't shot a whole lot of them to be perfectly honest with you. But I did have shot some since the beginning of season this year. I was over at Summer Lake opening weekend, killed a couple of limits of geese and a couple limits of ducks. And I'm here to tell you that I think steel shot works good. I've killed a lot of ducks and geese before over there by leading them a long ways. But these steel shot pattern, I believe, travels toward the bird a little faster. Consequently, you've got to cut out on your lead just a little bit. But all the birds that I hit... Fell. I didn't have a bit of trouble with crippling birds and having them to get back into the pond or back into a refuge somewhere where I couldn't get them. I believe if you put it right on them with steel shot, it'll kill them. I'm real excited about shooting steel shot now, even more so than before. I was a little bit wait and see for a long time like a lot of the waterfowl hunters was. I think the manufacturers... Have done real wonders with developing lead shot load or steel shot load now and I think we're gonna all see a real improvement in the shells even as we go along. The only real part I don't like about steel shot is if you go over and buy a box of these steel shot you just almost got to take out a second mortgage against the house. I think that'll improve in a little while too. I think the manufacturers will come along with some loading components where we can load steel shot just like we do lead shot. When you're out there hunting You better make sure that you check your regulations because if the place requires steel shot, you best have them. The way they check for steel shot is an enforcing officer can take a magnet, just touch the end of your shell. If it has steel shot in there, the magnet will pick it up. So check the regulations and as always, keep that safety on until you're absolutely sure. Its companion measure, measure 12, which could adjust the state's income tax structure, was rejected with a 71% no vote.
